Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The day I received my transfer, I vividly recall that it was in the evening when I was busy in the kitchen garden weeding. Then I suddenly heard my phone ringing, Upon checking my phone to see what the message entailed, I realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from Segovia technology. I was so happy and excited because I knew that we would be able to grow our business. I then went home and broke the good news to my husband who was equally happy and grateful. My husband and I embarked on planning on how we would cash out our funds.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The unconditional transfer from GiveDirectly gave us financial freedom. Our business was still small but we were able to boost it with the funds that we got. We can supply the goods to the respective destination right on time and in good conditions. We are grateful for the support that build our finances and gave has an opportunity for us to uplift our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
To ease the movement of collecting maize from farmers who are in different locations, my husband and I opted to buy a motorcycle worth KES 40,000 with part of the transfer. My husband is a businessman specialising in selling maize and I am a consistent farmer, together we are blessed with four children. The maize business is our major source of income for our family thus it was expensive to hire a motorcycle daily due to financial constraints since the business was still picking up. Finally, we used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. I am so grateful for the financial assistance that boosted our business highly without asking for anything in return.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have two neighbors who are doing well in dairy farming and I feel challenged to do the same. They are doing it in a small piece of land yet their cows still produce upto 70liters of milk a day. I have had a discussion with my husband but the challenge that we have is lack of money. My husband is a motorbike taxi rider and his daily income is KES 400 or even less. This money is spent to buy food leaving us with nothing at the end of the day. I plan to use my transfer to buy 1 cow and this will cost KES 50,000 while the dairy shade will take an extra KES 10,000. I will be happy to receive this money as this will mean a healthy competition between me and my neighbors resulting in economic prosperity for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In this village, we have an investment group where members contribute money for one another and this is done on rotational basis. Last month it was my turn and I got KES 6300 and I was so happy to receive such an amount.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the main challenge that my family is going through. Engaging in casual jobs to earn a leaving is not easy. Every morning I go to my neighbors houses in search of jobs and the one that is often available is weeding crops like maize and beans. The problem with these jobs is that it takes a while before one is paid. This subject my family to a lot of suffering because without money means you cannot buy essential needs like food
