How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer is purchasing sofa set seats and a goat. I am so grateful because I was able to decide on this and fulfill this on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The trainings and the enrollment process was perfectly done without any discrimination. Most of the people who received the transfer spent it well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 6,000 on purchasing sofa set seats for my house to look decent. I am so happy now in that whenever I have visitors at home they can sit well and relax. I spent KES 5,500 to purchase a goat, I had always wished to start a goat's rearing project but I did not have some money. Currently, I have one and I hope to expand this in the future. I spent KES 5,000 on purchasing wire and poles ready to fence my farm. This is to prevent cows from destroying my crops. Part of the money I paid hospital bills, I was admitted and given some medication. I am grateful because I currently I feel well and do my daily activities well. The rest of the money I spent on food and saved 5000 for emergencies. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home relaxing after having breakfast when I received a message notification. Since I do not know how to read due to my illiteracy, I called my helper so that she would read it and inform me of its contents. My heart was filled with joy when she informed me that it was a Mpesa message confirming that I had received the money that I had been promised by GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now live a happy life because I have been able to start building a granary for my family. We will be using it to store our farm produce and I am glad that my sitting room will no longer be congested. In addition, not everyone who comes to my house will know what I harvested and the quantity hence I will be able to maintain my private life especially when it comes to food security.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been storing my farm produce on one side of my sitting room. This always takes more spacious thus making my house squeezed and everyone who comes to my house can see everything that I have harvested. On receiving my transfer, I decided to spend KES 26000 to build a granary so that I can always have a good place to store my produce. I still have KES 8000 that I planning to use in acquiring a door and other basic needs for my family. In addition, I spent KES 20000 on clothes and beddings to replace the old ones and also bought enough food to last us for a month.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I intend to build a better kitchen house .The one I have is grass thatched and it is leaking hence letting some water .An iron sheet roofed house is good and will serve me well. My current kitchen has poor ventilation and smoke has affected my eyes alot especially if the firewood has not dried up well. My plan is build a house of approximately 18 iron sheets .It will cost approximately USD 4500. The rest of the money I plan to use for my medication, I have a problem with my ears ,I am partially deaf and I cannot hear well , someone talking to me has to shout alot.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest day is during the evening hours. It is during this time that I prepare my evening tea and relax as I take my tea.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am partially deaf and that is my biggest challenge.I used to hear well but later in life we had a scuffle with my late husband ,women used to be beaten by their husband ,wife battering was the order of the day,he hit me with an object on my right ear and ever since I have never hear on that ear. The other one is abit better though I can't hear well also,It pains me sometime.
