How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a single lactating cow that has consistently provided milk for my family of four during its peak seasons. Providing adequate feeds has been so expensive since its production is not enough to pay for its upkeep. I have a new goal to improve production by buying two other Friesian cows. Managing more than one is cheaper and, hopefully, their production will yield a good profit margin that will facilitate further expansion in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did a great job in our village. Many people transformed their households in their unique ways using the cash transfer that came with the freedom of spending independently without following any script. GiveDirectly reached out to everyone in the village without relying on the village leaders. The process was smooth and friendly in that the visiting officers used the language understood by everyone, thus easy to converse and respond to their questions. GiveDirectly should keep doing the good work in other villages without changing anything since the execution was perfect and welcomed by everyone.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer, I had an ongoing construction of the main house I had initiated with the first transfer. Completing it was so costly that it left me with a small amount just enough to put up a small kitchen after buying 18 iron sheets. Initially, I was living in a single house that I used both as a kitchen and a living room. I had to demolish the structure and put up a more decent one with more rooms for my family of four. I am happy that I am currently finishing up on the kitchen construction and will soon be operational.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7:30 am and I was at home preparing tea for my family when suddenly I received a phone call. I answered it and immediately after the call hang up is when I saw the SMS with the good news. I was so happy and I could not believe that I had received KES 55000 on my mobile money account. I shared the news with my husband who was also so excited about it. We thanked God because we now knew that we were going to fulfill the plans that we had made.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into my life and that of my family is that we managed to build a kitchen house. We thus no longer cook on the verandah which was making the iron sheets of the new house to be filled with smoke.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 30000 on doing some finishing on the main house that we had built. We bought ceiling boards and placed them in the house. We have been building the house for quite some time now, we usually build it bit by bit depending on the money that we get. With the remaining transfer amount, we used it on building a kitchen house. We bought iron sheets at KES 15000 and we also bought the timber frames at KES 30000. We had some amount that we had saved so we added it to transfer so that it could be enough. We have always been meaning to build a kitchen house but we have not been able to since we didn't have enough money and we wanted to finish the construction of the main house first. We have thus been using the verandah as our kitchen and I was getting worried since the smoke had started destroying the iron sheets of the new house. We are hence so much grateful to GiveDitectly because their transfer was of great help to us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Buying a liter of milk daily for KES 40 is a stressful and expensive thing in my life. I walk a distance of 1km daily towards the roadside to buy milk from the milk sellers.Waking up every day on a chilly morning to catch up with these milk sellers as well as leaving my daughter in bed alone or carrying her only back stresses me .My ambition has been to buy my own dairy cow where I can access nutritional milk without struggle on a daily basis. I will be able to do this with KES 45000 .Buying this cow will save me the energy and time of walking to and fro the buying point.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The unity between me and my spouse has brought me happiness in the past 6 months. My husband and I make decisions about the family , for any shortage in resources we accept the reality and be contented with what we both get in our lives. This has brought joy in my life .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of capital is the biggest challenge am currently facing. Constructing a kitchen has been a challenge to me due to inadequate funds.I work as a small- scale farmer planting vines and vegetables for consumption. My husband is a motorcycle rider and he earns KES 200 a day. This amount is insufficient to pay for household needs as well as put up a new structure.Cooking in my household is done in the open space where rains and excess heat affects us .This embarrasses me alot
