How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Building rental homes is what I'm doing right now. Since the property is near to a school, I have plans to set up a food kiosk there along with other quickly consumed items for students and teachers. I now operate a mobile fry stand in a nearby school, but I would prefer to have a permanent location where customers may purchase multiple items at once. I'll be able to increase my income because of this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I adore the organization's flexibility in allowing us to take part in the initiative. One aspect to creating sustainable initiatives is allowing people to participate in the decision-making process, and the organization did well in this area. They provided us cash without any constraints and allowed us to choose whether or not to participate. People have been inspired by this to spend money in a variety of ways to better their lives. Everyone appreciates the assistance.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Four of my kids are in secondary and primary education right now. They are my responsibility, and I must admit that taking care of the majority of their requirements has been difficult because I don't make much money from my side job selling fries to students at a local school. I invested $230 in a dairy cow to raise in order to boost our household income. After it has given birth, I hope to profit from milk sales, and in addition, I hope that my kids will have access to enough milk to improve their nutrition. In the future, I might also sell some of its young ones to fulfill our household demands. I used the first disbursement to pay for a deposit on a piece of property I had purchased but still owed the owner $100, which I fully settled with the most recent stipend. I'm delighted I now possess the plot of property on which I have already begun building rental homes. Our kids also had outstanding school fees balance of $135 which I paid with a portion of the allowance. The final $500 I had was used to buy food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 6 in the evening when I was washing the dishes with my daughter when my cellphone started ringing. Since my daughter was sitting just beside the phone, I requested her to check for me who it was. Upon checking, she realized that it was a notification indicating that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy because I knew I would achieve most of my long time. I shared the news with my other family members and I remember we couldn't afford to sleep on that particular night.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a big piece of land that I acquired after receiving the cash transfers. This is a dream come true for me because it has been my wish to own it but of financial hardships, this was not achievable. I opted for the piece of land because the initial one was no longer productive therefore we have been harvesting poor yields. In some seasons I used to lease from my friends which were expensive. Being a widow of five kids, the little I earned could only cater for the daily bread. During those moments I was so hopeless in life because I was certain that there is no way I could get the money needed to purchase the piece of land. For now, it still feels like a dream to me, and I will forever be thankful to GiveDirectly for what they did to me. My children will now have a place to construct their houses once they grow up.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first transfer on buying a piece of land (1acre) at KES 40000. I have desired to own it for years since the previous one was no longer productive and small in size. Am now a happy farmer because I will no longer lease from friends because it has been so costly. In addition to that, I paid school fees of KES 7000 for my children in primary and secondary schools respectively. They are now studying peacefully without any hiccups like before. This is an assurance of good performance and a promising future. Finally, I bought foodstuffs for my five kids which took us almost three weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Am so delighted to have attended the give directly barazas today, I always knew that they always send people transfers and I wished to be part of the beneficiaries but still I had a lot of curious questions in my mind that are now resolved. This is a great opportunity that will change my life instantly, since my husband passed, who was our bread winner I have been living a trouble some life, like going for days without food, and a house that is in bad shape, like we are always rained on but now I have a nice picture of how my old house will be transformed to be a better place, Thankyou give directly for visiting our village.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Am grateful that in the recent days me being part of the community health volunteer, I was invited for a 3 day seminar for triaging and sensitization on polio in Bamba town, where I got opportunity to interact with other community workers where we had light chats on lot of social issues that we are facing and this uplifted my spirits. The training provided some daily incentives which I used to change our daily meal to something yummy for my family, and this made everyone happy despite living in these tough economic times.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently there is drought in our area and I have had to transfer my livestock to another area, where I have to buy grass and water for them which is very costly. Another challange is when one takes a look from inside my home my rooftop is teared apart from the whirlwind that blows all the time so mostly I am rained on l, and also the sun gets in directly and as you can see right now temperatures are so high, so it's quite uncomfortable. During rainy seasons it attracts diseases like pneumonia especially for my grandchildren who are below 5 years. I also go for days without a meal and I have little grandchildren which is quite tough for me. So whatever small i get I have to give them a priority, which makes me feel bad about my current life.
