Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I got my first transfer from GiveDirectly, I felt so happy and thank Heaven for sending you people to our village. At that moment, I knew that my problems shall be over. My house was cold at night since it had no ceiling in it and also had no container for storing water.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my house is so warm since I sealed the spaces which were there on the walls of my house. At night, I sleep soundly since there no colder than it use to be before. Another difference is that I now have a water tank which enables me to store rainwater for use at home. I am glad that I do not go to the water pan to fetch water for use at home like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had a timber wall house with iron sheet roofing and the house was so cold at night and more so during rainy seasons. I would use like three blankets to keep warm but that couldn't keep me warm. I spent KES 30000 on buying a ceiling board and fixing it on the walls and roof side of my house. Since then, my house is so warm and I am thankful to GiveDirectly. I also bought a water tank at KES 15000 and now I have enough space to store rainwater for domestic use. The remaining amount of KES 9000, I spent on buying foodstuffs and some new clothes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means access to clean water. I am old and no longer have the strength to go to the river to fetch water. My grandchildren have been helping me but sometimes it's challenging when the school opens. I have wished to buy a water tank so that I can collect water from my house to help me become independent and access clean water for drinking. This tank will cost around KES 30000. My house also tends to be cold during the night due to incomplete finishing. This has been worrying since I am at risk of contracting pneumonia in regards to my age with reduced immunity. So I will spend KES 50000 to complete it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite my old age whenever I have the strength I do farming. Four months ago I planted sweet potatoes which yielded well. This has been my source of food and income as well and has brought joy and happiness into my life since I don't depend much on my children for food. When my grandchild whom I stay with needs school items I can sell some of the potatoes to purchase them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is financial constraints. Due to my old age, I have become economically inactive. I have a banana plantation which I depend on for income. This however is not sustainable since bananas grow into edible fruit at different times. A bunch of bananas I sell at KES 100. This income is insufficient to meet all my household needs. Sometimes I have to depend on my children for food.
