How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a goal which I hope to accomplish soon which is to open a retail shop within my village. I believe that once I will get enough funds to start the business our living standards shall improve. Currently, my spouse has been the family breadwinner, which has been quite tough for him since he relies on casual jobs. Therefore I feel there is a need for me to offer him support considering that our family is growing. Also, I will need enough cash to facilitate my children's education journey because they will be transitioning to higher institutions in a few years to come.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well and I do not think there is anything that they need to change in their operations. The idea of offering us unconditional cash transfers worked so well on our end because everyone was given an equal chance to choose what they needed in their household. Also, I had a one-on-one with the officer during the enrolment stage and I am so glad since he offered me helpful teachings about how to secure my money once received. This generally showed how the organisation cared about its beneficiaries.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part $120 of my second transfer on buying building materials which include the following; bags of cement and sand. This was purposefully for cementing my floor and plastering my house. Since it was a muddy house, I felt there was a need to upgrade because it was so stressful especially when it rained. My properties could at times get damaged hence experiencing loss as a result. I feel there is a huge relief now because I will no longer be undergoing destruction or being exposed to dust. I also bought a dairy cow at $200 which I am currently keeping in my compound. In two months to come, I am certain that I will start getting plenty of milk which will be for commercial purposes and the remaining litres for my family's consumption. At least I will no longer buy milk from friends, instead, I will save the cash and cater to some other needs. Additionally, I paid fees of $50 for my three children in primary school. As a parent, I am glad that they are no longer being sent home like before hence there is hope for better results. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food and decent clothes for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The message confirming the receipt of the cash transfer from give directly came in when I had just woken up. I was thrilled. Immediately, I rushed out to inform my brother-in-law of the great news. He was happy for me and we made plans to go and withdraw it the next day with his help. My first thought was to build a new 2 roomed house where my two children, my husband, and I will live comfortably. Something that we have been unable to do with our current home as it has only one room.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I can affirm that my life is better than how it was before. The transfer has helped me start building a new two-roomed home and my children will now have their own room. In addition to this, my house is now stocked up with food and it has been a while since we went to bed on an empty stomach. This is something that we often did because my husband earned very little as a gardener and monthly, he would only send us KES 500 for our use.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am unemployed and I depend on a husband who works as a gardener for financial support. His earnings are not much but the little he makes helps us get by and also caters to some of our two children's needs. When I received the funds from give directly, my child, who is in kindergarten had a school fee arrears of KES 2,000 which I settled. Then I bought him some new school uniforms. I furthermore bought clothes for him and his sibling to replace the old and ragged ones they had. To start off the construction of a new 2 roomed house which will be more spacious than the old one-roomed one we are living in, I bought some materials. The remaining amount I used it to buy some nourishment.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband works as a gardener, far away from home. I have for a long time been hoping that he will save up some money and come back home to start a business. Life is easier when he is around. He helps me with the farm work and that gives me time to do all other chores like fetching water, washing, and cooking. It also makes me happy to see him around us. This money could mean the beginning of his journey back home. Together, we will think of a business to start and run.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful for the gift of life and that of my children. I find joy in my family and also in good health. I do not take that for granted.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My house is breaking apart in bits. I worry that soon, it will fall. We are not in a financial capacity to build another one or even repair this one. I feel so helpless at this point.
