How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My two siblings in secondary schools depends on me for their school fees and their upkeep after we lost our parents a few years ago. To meet this needs, I work as a mechanic in our local centre and this has been a struggle because what I make form this hustle is barely enough. When GiveDirectly promised to send us the transfer, the first goal was to pay my siblings school fees, and that is exactly what I did with a big chunk of the transfer. I feel so relieved about this and assured that my siblings won't drop out of school for lack of school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What I loved about Givedirectly is how they sent the transfers. we were able to receive the transfers directly from them, compared to other organisations who usually send aid through proxies or third parties, which makes it prone to misuse hence less likely to reach the intended recipients. I am also happy that we were given the freedom to use the transfer depending on our individual needs. We commend them for the good job they did, God bless them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KSh. 25000 of the second transfer to pay for one of my sibling's school fees who was joining high school. I am so glad that these transfers came at the right time because I only had a little amount of money saved from working as a mechanic. I spent the rest of the transfer to buy some clothes for ourselves and some food which I sent back home to my grandfather's house where my siblings currently stay. I am so grateful to GiveDIrectly for the financial support which enabled me to do that which I couldn't afford at the moment.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 6 am and I was still sleeping when suddenly, I heard my phone ringing hence notifying me of a new message. I wondered to myself who could have thought of contacting me that early. I reached out for my phone which was just beside my bed and I checked it. I was so surprised when I found out that I had received KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had earlier promised us. I became so excited on seeing this and I thanked God for everything.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life and that of my family. My sisters are happy because I have already bought for them all the necessary school items. I am just waiting for the one to join the secondary school to go to school so that I can pay her school fees with the remaining amount that I still have saved. I am thus happy and less stressed with the school fees issue. I have hence been able to concentrate on my work fully. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I got the transfer, I first took out KES 20000 and I used it on buying maize for the consumption of my two sisters back home and some clothes for them. I then saved the whole of the remaining amount. I did so because schools were about to be reopened and I had not gotten enough money for paying school fees for them. One of them is joining secondary school in the next academic year and a lot of money will be needed for paying school fees and buying the necessary school items. Our parents passed on way before and hence they solely depend on me for everything. I am casually employed as a mechanic in a motorcycle garage. The money that I get paid usually helps me in meeting my needs, buying food, and paying school fees for my sisters.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means quality education to my siblings. I have two siblings under my care. Both of them are in secondary school and have been struggling to pay for their school fees. I plan to use KES 50,000 clearing fees balance and pay two years upfront. For the remaining, I will buy a second-hand motorcycle worth KES 50,000 that will help me generate income daily to support my siblings.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month I heard of GiveDirectly heading towards our location. My prayer was that they will arrive and give me a helping hand so that I can start life afresh. Luckily, they visited the village and did community Barraza and since then my heart has been at piece.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the main challenge we are currently facing. Our family land was sold to gather for medical bills for my parents but later both of them passed away. I was forced to buy ⅛ a piece of land to build the houses since the person who bought my father's land decided to evict us. Since then no place to cultivate and I only depend on my daily hustle to get food. We have always lived a hand to mouth life which is very hard and complicated.
