Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While I was busy farming, I heard an alert on my phone. Upon checking, I saw that I had received a message. I rushed to my nephew and asked him to read it for me. He confirmed that I had received funds from give directly. This put me in a fallacious mood. The following day, I implored him to go and withdraw the funds for me so I could buy myself some food.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I used to live in a single-room thatched house which was very squeezed and there were times when my five grandchildren would come to spend the night with me. I needed to expand it to make it more comfortable for both myself and them. But since I never had the means, this looked impossible for me. Then I got to hear about give directly, where I was enrolled and later received funds from them. My life changed because I have been able to fulfill my desire to build a spacious house. Although it's yet to be completed, it's way more comfortable, and warmer during the night, and if it rains there are no leakages as compared to the previous one. This is the greatest difference I have noted in real life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It has been more than 10 years ever since my husband died leaving me to fend for our son who is now all grown and has five children. We all live in the same compound and we would help each other from time to time. To meet my needs, I farm for other people for pay, and the days I am successful. I get to earn KES 200. When I got these funds from give directly, I had had not made money that day and there was no food in the house. So, I did some shopping to restock my house with some nourishment.  I then started building a new 2-roomed house with a veranda to replace the one-roomed thatched house I had which was very cold inside during the night. To start working on the project, I bought some tree logs at KES 8000, 20 iron sheets each selling at KES 950, some nails, plus the payment of the laborers. The house is almost complete, the only part remaining is the doors and to also furnish it, I want to buy a bed and a mattress as I don't have one.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A backup plan is what comes to mind when I think of this money. I plan to buy two cows and three goats. A cow is about 20000 KES, and a goat is 4000. I will raise them and at any time I have an emergency or need money I can sell one or two to attend to the need. The rest of the amount I will spend on household goods, like food and other necessities.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful for the gift of life, I am getting old with each passing day but the fact that I am alive and well is a blessing.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food scarcity is my main concern. I have to buy food from the shop. Previously I would harvest from the farm but due to the drought we are facing, I have not been able to harvest anything. I work as a casual worker only that the income is nor sufficient.
