How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am hopeful that shortly, I will open a hotel within the town centre. Lately, I have been thinking of it since I have been jobless for a long and it's high time I need to support my spouse who has been the breadwinner. Also, I trust this is the most lucrative business in town because of the population and the ongoing business within the city.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in my village by ensuring that they visited every household. There was no discriminating case that was recorded since they did not consider someone's tribe, religion, age or even health issues. We were all treated equally. I, therefore, can't mention anything that they need to work on as they move to another village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a piece of land. The current one is no longer productive and I have been forced to lease from my friends which were very expensive. Also, in most of the seasons, I use to harvest very low yields because I did not have sufficient cash to lease. I am glad that I will no longer have to pay to cultivate instead I will be saving money. Also, I paid fees of $100 for my daughter who is in her third year of secondary school. She will finally be able to sit for the exams with her colleagues which I feel the s motivation for her considering she has been missing exams because of the arrears. Later on, I bought five goats that I am currently rearing in my compound. Goats reproduce twice a year and they can survive so well in my region. Therefore I am certain that soon they will increase in number and I will be in a position to sell some in case of any financial challenge. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my four family members. My children are now healthier and more active even in school unlike before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 8 in the morning, I was from the dam which is 5KM away from home when I heard my phone ringing so loudly. Since I am illiterate, I requested my helper to confirm who might have sent a message at that particular moment. After checking, he realized it was an Mpesa message confirming that I had received my first KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was shocked and happy since I never saw it coming that soon. We were all grateful to the organization for honoring its promise to us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have goats that I am currently keeping in my compound. I am grateful for having these valuable assets to depend on in case of financial constraints. As time goes by, they will reproduce and increase in number, I will be able to sell some so that I can invest the money in some other projects like starting a hotel business. Through this, then I will be having a stable source of income because currently I depend on the charcoal business is seasonal and not lucrative. For that reason, my children have been on and off because of the arrears. Moreover, starving has been like a routine in my household. Therefore I am certain that through the goats, I will be able to fulfill the household's basic needs effectively without any challenge.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying livestock moreso five goats at KES 22500. It has been my wish to own them for years but I could not afford to purchase even one because of the financial hardships that I was encountering. I, therefore, settled for the goats because the climatic condition of my region is favorable for them to thrive. To add to that I purchased a piece of land ( a quarter acre) at KES 15000. I am planning to construct a new rental house which will soon be my stable source of income. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items such utensils.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means to start goat keeping. I have longed to own goats but all the plans I had were fruitless. A goat is sold at 3,000 KES,I will buy 10 goats which will cost 30,000 KES. Goats give birth twice in a year this means by end of the year I will have doubled the number and I start selling them to help in settling my daily life expenses especially food and settling hospital bills for my grandchildren who are prone to diseases. I will also use the remaining to buy food, mattress and a bed.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son bought me a pair of kanga which I liked as it is well decorated. This means he loves me and it brought joy and happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Scarcity of options to make money. The only way to make money in this area is by cutting down trees to make charcoal and this business requires a lot of stamina, with my age I am slowly losing the strength to cut down trees.
