How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was before because the transfers have enabled me to complete my house which had stalled for some months after materials got depleted in the process. Secondly, I have been able to provide my family's basic needs effectively. I addition to all these, I have invested my money in a partnership that we mainly deal with herbal medicines and I am expecting to get good returns from it.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
Currently, I do not have a new goal. I am aiming at improving and marketing our herbal products, where I have invested my money. I aim to see this business growing and expanding.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving my most recent transfer which was KES 50000, I invested KES 36000 in partnership with others and started a business which we deal with marketing and selling herbal medicines. To me, this is a long term investment which I am hoping to earn a good income through it. Apart from this, I spent KES 15000 to purchase some materials for the completion and painting of my new house. I spent the remaining amount to cater for my family basic needs such as food and paying for expenses.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that I am financially stable. The income from my business is enough to meet all my basic needs. I used to depend on casual jobs before receiving my transfers and the income I got was not enough to cater all my basic needs such as food. I am now happy since I no longer depend on casual jobs and I do not struggle to provide for my family.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to open a beauty shop. Currently, I sell my beauty products in streets and my customers sometimes find it difficult to find me. At times they go to other shops and thus I lose some of my customers hence low income. Opening this shop means that I will be stationed in one location and will be easy for my customers to get the beauty products hence more income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend my most recent transfer to start a new business where I sell beauty products. I have been thinking about the business but I have never get the capital to start the business. When I received my transfer, I was so happy since it was the best opportunity to start this business. I also saved part of the transfer so that I will use it in future to expand the business.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I have a passion for baking, even though it is something I have not done professionally. I am currently doing it commercially but the lack of technical skills and proper equipment such as an oven really makes it tough for me to compete with other bakers in the area. I will use my next transfers to pay for a short course on professional baking then buy some necessary equipment like an oven for efficiency because am currently using a charcoal cooker ('jiko') which is less efficient. Of whatever is left, I will open an M-pesa shop and clear the rest of the debts I owe my friends.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The debts I owed my friends had really taken a toll on our relationships because they felt that I had the money but just refused to pay them. I mostly took different routes just to avoid meeting them because I felt really guilty having taken too long with their money. Ever since I repaid the debts, my confidence has been restored as I am free and less burdened. I am also free to take any route because I am confident I will clear the rest of the debts very soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used part of the money to clear off some of the loans I had borrowed from my friends in our group when I was faced with financial difficulties a while back. I had planned to travel upcountry for the holidays and the money came in handy in terms of transport and shopping for food items and gifts for my relatives. I gave some of the money as tithe to thank God for taking away from me the shame of unpaid debts.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I Was still asleep when a friend of mine came knocking on my door asking for my help on a text she had received but did not know the source. When I read the text, what stood out was the name 'Segovia' which I remember reading in one of GD's brochures. I immediately knew that she had received money from GD and quickly dashed for my own phone to check if I had received the same, and indeed it was true. We screamed and danced for a few seconds before realizing that we would alert our neighbours. We live in a slum where your neighbour should not know if you have something valuable.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Reason why I prioritize my plan the way I did, is because I have loan that give me lots of pressure, even my debtors are not in good terms with me, hence If I pay this debts, I will have peace of my mind, second priority would be investing in new business where I will open an bakery shop, usually my target customers are ladies and children, according my research these target would make my business to be on the safe side, third priority would be improving my house since I have already started foundation i will use transfer continue with my project.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is unemployment, i usually imagine living without job, with all this responsibility! a part from that, economy! am having much stress with the little money that am earning, sometimes I usually wonder what if I didn't have this job, how could be my life been, it usually frightened me day and night, because in this life everything needs money, that's why you find that many youths got in engaged with crime due to lack of jobs.
What are your greatest ambitions?
Ever since I was young I used to like eating cakes, now I even see my daughter following my routes, I have this dream of becoming a baker in future, like it has always been my passion and hobbies doing bakery, arranging events is another hobbies so if I link the two I know I will be a popular baker.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
During my free time, which is always on week days at least from 3:00pm where I take my children from school, due to lot of activities in school, i wash them and give them tea, if no extra clean uniform, I will do laundry at around 6:30pm I go and to look for supper and prepare it, later help them with homework, bedtime prepare them to bed.
