How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I dream that someday I would purchase a cow to cut down on the cost of buying milk. Though I don't have the cash at the moment, it is my prayer that I realise this dream. I still have children in school and the inflation is high. Above all, I am grateful for the support that boosted my finances amazingly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The support that we got from the organization uplifted our living standards amazingly. I comfortably paid school fees for my children, unlike before, when I would be forced to sell some of our properties. In my opinion, I have not seen things that need to be corrected.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The cost of living is extremely high at the moment. Affording a meal daily has been an uphill task because of the cost of maize flour, which is $20 per 2kg. I depend on my firewood business to earn a living, which is so cumbersome because of my age. Receiving money from GiveDirectly meant that I needed to prioritise the school fees needs of my children, therefore, I used $30 in settling the arrears. Additionally, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. School fees had been the most pressing need because I have three children who are in school. I am a fulfilled parent knowing that they can all study peacefully without having to worry about being sent home to collect school fees. I am forever grateful for the support that lifted our living standards amazingly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember vividly that it was around 6 am. When I heard a message notification tone from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I could not sleep anymore. I woke up and immediately informed my family members. There was a lot of celebrations that morning. After taking the breakfast I went to withdrew the money. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. This was to cut the daily cost of buying milk which is so costly for me. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. I depend on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village. Sometimes when there are no jobs my family would not get the basic needs. This was so demoralizing and stressful. I have always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money. when I received the transfer I felt so happy and grateful. This was like a sunrise to me, I was able to purchase a dairy cow and I knew I would not incur the daily expenses again. My family members get enough milk unlike before. This has given me peace of mind to focus on other things to improve the standard of living for my children. I sell the extra milk to earn an income to meet other household items. I am so grateful because were it not GiveDirectly all this could have taken quite some time to own.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 35,000 on purchasing a dairy cow. This is my dream come true. I have always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money. I used to buy milk daily and it is so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. Currently, I am no longer stressed because my family gets enough milk. I spend the rest of the money on purchasing building materials and building a better and more spacious house for my family. The construction is ongoing and waiting for the second transfer so that I can complete it and move in with the family. We lived in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. This was so demoralizing and stressful especially when it was raining.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will improve my business which I am currently doing. I started selling firewood in the nearby market two years ago which have enabled me to pay for school fees and sustained my family of six. In a normal day I can earn a profit of KES.300 after the deduction of other expenses like transport and labour. I have always wanted to build a structure that will store this firewood during rainy season. Also the structure will be next to the tarmac road where I leave and this will enhance the accessibility. To realise this,I intend to build a structure worth KES.60,000 and use the remaining to increase the stock of the business. This will greatly increase my profit margin and expand the business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the last three months I joined a Sacco in the village where we all deposit our savings. Initially I used to put the money in the Mpesa account which was not really effective to me. From the Sacco I can now borrow a small amount of money when need arise. I am able to comfortably pay for school fees and meet other basic needs in my house.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently the demand from the customers is too high. Being a rainy season many people around here prefer buying firewood as the source of energy. This is because it is cheaper compared to other other sources of energy. I have been receiving a number of orders from the customer and it is overwhelming to me. I use donkey as means of transport and my capital is not enough. Today I am happy that i will use this transfer from Givedirectly to expand my business and make it more efficient to the customers.
