How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
To supplement my husband’s salary, I would love to start a small business selling either second-hand clothes or vegetables or get employed.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Everyone in our village was overjoyed to receive a free cash transfer that came with the freedom to spend it however they saw fit. The organization is doing so well because it first educates people on the best practices for using their accounts to avoid losing money to fraudsters.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of six children and they are all currently studying. Paying their school fees has been quite a challenge since I do not have a job. My husband who is the area chief is the sole breadwinner in the family but his salary is not always sufficient to cater to all the basic needs. When I got the second transfer, I cleared the pending school fees arrear which had accumulated to $370. I also spent $60 on new pairs of clothes for all my children. From the remaining amount, I spent $100 on 10kg of corn flour and other kinds of foodstuffs that we did not have.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in the kitchen at around 4 pm assembling some cooking materials before leaving for school to pick up my children. My phone was on the table outside the house. When I felt like I was getting late, I opted to confirm what time it was from my phone. On holding the phone, I saw an envelope-like icon on the screen. Upon opening, I found out that, it was the first transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. My heart melted in joy and happiness knowing that, my daughter whom I had completed her primary education but I had no hopes of taking to her secondary school would be going to school because of GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am grateful for the support that I received from GiveDirectly. This transfer relieved me from thoughts that I did not know how I would go about them. Seeing my daughter crying because I could not afford to take her to secondary school after performing well was paining me. As of now, she is in school doing well in her studies and this is due to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, the priority was to take my daughter to secondary school. Therefore, I used a total of KES 25000.00 in doing some shopping for her as well as paying her form one school fees. By so doing, I restored her happiness because she had been discouraged from progressing in her academics due to the poverty situation at home. I also took KES 8000.00 and paid the school fees balance for my form four son before he is sent out of school for the same having in mind that he is in his final year and hence requires proper concentration. Thereafter, I looked at the hunger situation. I only rely on selling charcoals which is not a business to be relied on since it has a very low income. To ensure I have food security at home, I bought a sack of maize for KES 6000.00, 10 liters of cooking oil for KES 3200.00 and a bale of wheat flout at KES 2700.00. Thereafter, I took KES 9000.00 and bought two mattresses for my children since the ones they had were worn out.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I own a water tap in my compound but water tends to run out of our taps for more than two weeks this makes me buy it at a higher price using motorbikes. I intend to buy a water tank where I can store water and sell it at a higher price to others who need it. I have one child in secondary school I will pay his school fees to give him ample time because I believe education is the key to success. I will also buy mattresses for the children to have comfort. For the remaining amount, I will buy food and one goat to rear.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My children who have in secondary school had always been performing poorly. I had to sit him down and explain to him the hardship we encounter at home. Last month I thank God he came back with good results which brought joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was working as a cook in one of the secondary schools where I used to get a salary of 15,000 KES per month. My doctor advised me to abandon that job so I left my husband as the sole breadwinner. He had to take a loan to build a house and with his payslip, he gets 5,000 KES per month which is insufficient to buy food and pay school fees for his children. How I wish I could be better to help my spouse.
