How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am asthmatic and my condition has been worsened by the surroundings because I live in a house made of mud. Since the transfers enabled me to achieve my main goals, my current goal is to improve our current house by changing the mud walls into timber and to expand my current business of buying and selling grains. This will reduce the amount of dust circulating in the house and I believe that my health will improve. In addition, I will be able to continue supporting my son if he wants to further his education using the money from the business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by being transparent in their enrollment process and by educating us on how we can spend the money and the don'ts of the project. This enabled us to spend our money wisely to achieve our goals depending on our priorities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I operate a small business of buying and selling grains mainly maize and beans in the village. Being a single mother, the responsibilities of paying college fees for my son had overwhelmed me. Due to this, I had not been able to build a house for him and had to sleep with his nephews during the holidays when he is at home. Upon receiving my second transfer, I spent KES 30000 to complete the payment of the land that I had bought using my first transfer. Also, I spent KES 20000 to build a house for my son and spent the remaining amount on food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning and I was busy washing utensils when I heard my phone ringing notifying me of a new SMS. I told myself what could this message be all about as I reached out to my phone to check it. I opened the SMS to read it and I could not believe my eyes when I saw that I had received KES 55000 on my phone. I thought I was dreaming that I left whatever I was doing and I sat down in disbelief meditating about what had transpired. It was after a short while that I heard my neighbors celebrating asking themselves if they had received the SMS that I now believed that indeed it was real. I was so happy and I celebrated giving thanks to God for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life. I now have land that I can call it my own. I have started constructing the house. I now also have a piece of land that I can till and I thus no longer have to hire other people's lands to farm. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for making this happen.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the money that I got on settling the payment for a piece of land that I had bought before. I had bought half an acre and I had struggled to pay most of the money. I was however not able to manage to complete the payment due to lack of funds. The owner had kept on asking me to complete paying him but I was not in a position to because I was struggling to find the money for paying my son's school fees who was in secondary school. I bought the piece of land because I wanted to move out from home with my children and settle somewhere else. I also wanted land of my own which I could till and make some money by selling some of the produce. I used to rent other people's lands to till and grow maize. I could harvest about eight bags which I used to supply to my son's school. The school used to pay me KES 5000 per bag but instead of them paying me, I used to ask them to use the money in settling his school fees. It however reached a point where I could not continue with the farming of maize because it started getting affected by some disease and hence it was no longer doing well. I am therefore so much grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me to achieve my dream.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition is to own a bigger piece of land and practice large scale farming. I was not fortunate to get married so my parents gave me a small piece of land that I could built on and raise my sons. In my culture women are not entitled to inherit land but they can be given a small piece to build on if they are not married.I haven't been able to own a land and practice farming because whatever money I got from my small business was for their education. Receiving this transfer will enable me to finish purchasing a piece of land in the next village and continue farming. This will amount to KES 60,000. The remaining transfer will aid in paying for my son's plumbing course fee which is KES 20,000 and the rest in buying food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is mid day when I'm working at the farm. I spend most of my day there and it's where I get income to sustain my family's needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is insufficient capital. As a single parent I struggle in providing for my family. My late mother who passed on 2 weeks ago was dependant on me, I would sell maize and beans to support both households. Even though my last born is now an adult he still needs my support in paying his fee.
