How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to do more farming. I usually till a small part of my land due to lack of enough money. I would hence like to increase the size so that I can get more harvest. I do not have a job and hence I usually depend on farming and small-scale dairy farming to make money for upkeep and paying school fees for my three children. My other goal is to seek medical attention. One of my eyes has a problem and hence I am only able to see with one eye.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they uplifted the lives of many people in the community with the transfers that they gave people. Many people were able to make many developments and hence they changed their lives for the better. They also did well by holding a meeting with the community members before starting the enrollment process. The people were taught well and they got to learn a lot.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the recent transfer money on buying a cow and four sheep. I bought the cow at KES 25000. I decided to buy the cow to add to the one that I had so that I could increase my milk production. The cow that I have been having has been helping me especially when it calves because I usually get milk that I can sell some. The money from the sales is what I usually use in buying food and other small household needs such as sugar, soap, etc. Another cow hence means more milk and we will be having a constant supply of milk because when one cow is dry, the other one can still be milked. I also decided to buy the sheep because it is a way of saving money and also because they usually multiply in number very fast. The sheep are thus going to be of great help to me in the future especially when I face an emergency because I can sell some and get the money. I am glad that two of the sheep that I bought have already given birth. With the remaining amount of money, I used it in buying maize for our consumption, and I bought some clothes for a grandmother that used to live in my household. It is, however, unfortunate that the grandmother passed on.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. When I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I was doing my morning chores. I reluctantly check it. I couldn't believe my eyes whenI was doing my daily chores When I heard a ringtone message from my phone When I check it I couldn't believe my eyes, it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I have never received such amount of money in my entire life. I felt so happy and overwhelmed with joy. I stopped whatever I was doing and rushed to inform my family members. They all celebrated with joy. I knew I would be able to buy sofa set seats. I prepared and went to withdrew the money the same day. I am so happy because GiveDirectly enabled us to own assets which could have taken quite some time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer and goats. This is an investment that I had always wished to own. I do small scale farming and I had wished to own some livestock but we didn't had the money. Sometimes I do casual jobs in the village, sometimes to get this jobs is so hard. The amount of money that I could get was so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I didn't had an extra income to save. Currently I have a heifer and goats. Goats reproduce twice per year and it really helps whenever there is an emergency. When my cow reproduce in the next few months I will be able to get enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other basic household needs. I am so happy because GiveDirectly came to our rescue at the right time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 1,760 to purchase Sofa set seats. Whenever I had visitors I no longer get worried on where they will sit. I bought four goats at a cost of KES 18,000, heifer at a cost of KES 14,000. This is the best investment because I will be able to get enough milk when my cow reproduce in the next few months. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my family members. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have managed to build iron roofed house. But my biggest challenge has been to buy chairs. I have only three chairs which is not even enough for my family. I expect to cost me 10 dollars. I would also want to buy a cow at a cost of 20 dollars. This will help help me generate more income when i sell milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when i wake up and the sick member of my family is feeling better. It brings me relief.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship in my life is that i have a sick member of the family. Last December she was operated which took a lot of money. Since then she has not been well and i have to take care of her hence i cannot look for a job. I even had to sell cows that i had to pay for the hospital bill.
