How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a teacher and I am looking forward to save my salary towards building a rental shop on a land that I bought. Accomplishing this means that I will be able to rent the shop out and I will be able to get the money for basic needs and when I retire, I will also have it as a source of income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is supporting everyone in the village regardless of their social class. Although, I have not seen anything that they need to improve on, I would urge them to support orphans and people living with HIV/AIDS more. Orphaned children are at risk of never going to school and supporting them will mean so much to them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Although I am blessed to have a good house and basics that I would have needed at my age, my son who got married a couple of yeas ago did not have a house of his own to live with is family and as a mother I used to pity him. Although he is hard working, he couldn't secure a better job in the city and he was struggling to provide for his young family. My husband who operates a general shop recently employed him as a shopkeeper but still, the salary that he earns is only enough for basic needs and he cannot afford to build a house for now. When I received my second transfer, I spend $200 to furnish a two rooms guest house that we had and gave it it to him to stay with his family. He was so happy for this kind gesture and I'm grateful that GiveDirectly made it possible. I gave the balance to my husband who added more stock to his business.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the evening when I was busy preparing dinner for my family, My son had gone for an errand at the shop. I can vividly recall that he came home hurriedly looking all anxious. On asked why he looked unsettled that was when he told me that he had overheard our neighbours talking about the receipt of their initial transfer. Upon confirming on my phone, I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with happiness and gratefulness because I knew that I would be able to accomplish my goals. We then embarked on planning how we will be able to utilize our transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am glad and grateful that I was able to clear the school fees arrears with the transfer that I had received from GiveDirectly. Additionally, I was able to build a house for my son. I was unable to accomplish this before due to financial constraints since I was servicing a loan which I had taken earlier due to school fees responsibilities. I am so grateful for the support that brought so much happiness into our lives by lifting our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I thought of building a house worth KES 30,000 for my son who had just graduated from university. This is because he has a wife and a child yet they did not have their place. I was unable to accomplish this goal before since I had taken a loan from my employer to cater for school needs. I am a primary school teacher, married and a mother of four children. Secondly, I used KES 10,000 to clear school fees for my children, I then started a poultry project where I used KES 3000. And lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. I am so happy for the support that lifted our living standard amazingly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Currently I own three self-contained rental houses in Chebunyo market and at the moment tenants face regular water shortage. Every now and then I get calls from them complaining and this has been a source of stress to me. I have a desire to buy a 3500-liter water tank to solve this problem and this will cost KES 24000. My monthly rental income is KES 9000 and this spent on paying school fees for my 3 children. Receiving this money will enable me to buy a water tank that will solve water shortage for my tenants.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a farmer and in November last year, I harvested 5-bags of sorghum which I sold at a cost of KES 5000 per bag. This really encouraged me and I was happy about what I was able to achieve.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Getting safe water for domestic use is a big challenge in this area and this is occasioned by persistent drought that is experienced in this area. I am a dairy farmer and in my farm I have 10 cows each taking at least 70-liters of water per day. This translates to 700-liters for the 10-cows that I have. I cover a distance of 5 kilometers to get to the nearest water pan and I have to queue because I am not the only in need of water. This means that I have to spend the entire day on this activity alone
