How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the arrival of GiveDirectly, I was living in a mud walled house. I never thought I would one day afford to build a semi permanent house. Getting these transfers has enabled me to change my mud walled house to a semi permanent one and with a cemented floor. My family is now a happier family than It had been before we received our transfers. I have also been able to practice more advanced farming this time around. I have been able to till my land in time, afford hybrid seeds and apply fertilizers to my maize plantation. The transfers came in at a time when we were approaching the planting season. I am going to have the biggest harvest ever from my maize plantation.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my own opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in their selection criteria. Visiting all the households in the village was one thing I envied about them. It showed their commitment to really assess the situation in every household and in no doubt, all deserving households were given an equal chance of benefiting from the transfers. On the other hand, I did not find anything to recommend for change by GiveDirectly. I just felt that everything they did was perfect.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used my second transfer to improve our house. We have been living in a mud walled house and it had always been my desire to improve this house to a more modern one. The little amount of money that I got from my daily casuals could not allow me to make this improvement. When I got these transfers, I was finally able to accomplish my long term goal. We now have a concrete walled house with a cemented floor. The house is much more comfortable and secure for the family and is easier cleaned than the former. This shall forever be a constant reminder of the help I got from GiveDirectly.
