How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have two children candidates who will be proceeding to high school early next year and therefore, my goal is to complete the project of building my house by the end of this year so that I will be able to pay school fees for my children without much strain.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The transformation in my community is evident that unconditional cash transfers can change lives of people in various ways. Some people have built houses, others have bought cows, others have bought tanks etc. Therefore, what GiveDirectly does well is giving people unconditional cash transfers so that they can spend it based on their priorities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Both my husband and I are teachers but although he is employed, I have not yet secured a government job. For the longest time, we were planning to build a permanent house but we didn't achieve this because of overwhelming family responsibilities as we have four children in school. With the first and second transfers, we managed to build a two bedroom house structure that we are looking forward to complete in the near future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was with my family at 8:00 pm and I was preparing dinner. I saw a message from segovia technology and I straight away knew that the money was from GiveDirectly. I shared the good news with my family who were all very happy to hear this.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the payment of school fees and the building materials that we have bought. We normally rely on dairy keeping which has always enabled us to get just enough to pay school fees and feed our families. We would not have been able to raise enough money that would see us clear the school fees in time and I am personally very much indebted to GiveDirectly for enabling us do this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 20000 to pay school fees for my three children who are all in various academies. We used the remaining amount to buy building materials as we get ready to build a new house. We could not raise enough money to pay school fees for our children initially and I am so much grateful that GiveDirectly made it easier for us to clear the fee.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means the completion of my cows shed. For a year now, we have been struggling to complete it so as to start a zero grazing unit. I was planning to commit KES100,000 from my savings to buy dairy cows. I am lucky that with these transfers, we will be able to fulfill this. Dairy farming is doing good now because of the readily available market for milk. This will ease the burden payment of school fees for my children in private school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a teacher by professional employed in a nearby public primary under casual terms. Last month school management motivated us with KES3000 as an appreciation of our good work. It gives me joy when I see people loving my work and which gives me the energy to do my best.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge we are facing currently is financial constraints. My spouse who is a primary school teacher, is the one paying for my school fees and my three children in private schools. Almost all of his salary goes into it with no savings and this has halted our development like dairy farming which we stopped for a year now.
