How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current plan is to accumulate a significant number of goats to support my children’s education. Covering school fees for all twelve of my children has been a major challenge. I’m pleased with the progress I’ve made so far; thanks to the transfers, I was able to buy a goat and hope to acquire many more in the future. I’m confident that having a larger flock will enable me to pay their school fees on time, alleviating some of the stress I’ve been experiencing. This will also provide my children with a smoother learning experience, reducing the struggles they’ve had to endure.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Managing school fees for my twelve children, who are spread across primary and secondary schools, has been an ongoing challenge. As the sole provider for my family, relying on farming has become increasingly difficult, especially given the severe dry season we're currently facing. This has pushed me to seek alternative means of support, such as fishing in nearby rivers. With the recent financial support, I managed to pay $20 towards the school fees, though it didn't cover the entire amount owed. Nevertheless, this contribution has eased some of the financial pressure, and my children are now attending school and receiving a good education, which I hope will serve as a motivating factor for them. In addition, I purchased a goat for $34 as a future asset. This goat will be a valuable resource if I encounter financial difficulties later on. Food insecurity has been another major concern, worsened by the ongoing drought, which sometimes leaves us without sufficient food. To address this, I used $57 of the funds to stock up on enough food to sustain us for a while. I’m relieved that my family can now go to bed with a full stomach, a small but significant comfort in these challenging times.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This year, my focus is on expanding my goat-rearing business. It's a lucrative venture, as goats require minimal maintenance and yield high profits. I plan to utilize my upcoming transfers to invest in this endeavor. With sufficient food from the previous harvest, the additional income from goat-rearing will allow me to cover my children's school fees. I am happy with the progress I have made this far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I support my large family of twenty-two through subsistence farming. Previously, educating my nineteen children was incredibly challenging as I struggled to afford their school fees. Moreover, our small house could not accommodate all of them adequately. I am thankful for the assistance I have received, as it has enabled me to build a larger home to accommodate my entire family. Additionally, I have been able to invest in poultry and pay school fees for my children. Out of the transfers, I allocated $68 to settle a debt for my children's secondary school fees. I saved the remaining $34 to cover their upcoming educational expenses later this month. Education is a priority for me, as I believe it is the key to success. I am sincerely grateful to GiveDirectly for empowering my family through these transfers.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I aspire to establish a chicken farm in my local area, recognizing the potential profitability of this venture. I plan to utilize the forthcoming transfers to finance the establishment of the farm. I am pleased to report that I have already initiated the process of acquiring chickens and am eagerly anticipating the upcoming year. This business venture holds the promise of being a reliable source of income for my family, giving me the financial resources to comfortably support the education of my children. I am content with the progress I have made so far and am optimistic about the future success of this venture.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a self-taught carpenter specializing in crafting beds and other furniture, I have found that the income generated from this trade has proven insufficient to meet the needs of my large family. Consequently, I have turned to farming as an additional means of sustenance. I bear the responsibility of supporting fourteen children, all of whom are actively pursuing their education. The financial transfers I receive play a crucial role in covering their educational expenses and ensuring a steady supply of food. Faced with a shortage of food due to an inadequate harvest in the previous season, I allocated $84 to procure necessary provisions for my family. Subsequently, I utilized the remaining $18 to acquire chickens, which I intend to raise until maturity. The assistance extended to me has been a source of profound gratitude, and I feel both happy and privileged to be the recipient of such support.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I hope to build a chicken coop and grow chickens for sale. This will considerably supplement my income and allow me to cover the basic needs of my family. I'd also like to try subsistence farming now that we've had enough rain in the last two months. This means food security for my family and an improvement in the quality of our life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Life has not been easy for me and my family of twelve, as we have been living in abject poverty. I sell firewood and logs to provide for my family, who count on me for all their basic necessities. The business has been struggling due to bad weather and difficult economic conditions, so the transfers couldn't have happened at a better time. Due to the extended drought, we were unable to gather food from our farms, so I paid $34 to buy food for my family. I then spent another $34 to pay off school fees for five of my children who were at home due to arrears. The remainder of the funds were spent on purchasing day-old chicks, which I intend to rear and sell at a profit after they have grown and multiplied. I am pleased to say that my life has improved since enrolling in this program.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Supporting the education of my twelve children and providing for their daily needs like food is my priority. Since nine are still in primary school, and they have a long way before completing at least the high school level, I would be happy if I obtained a reliable source of income to fund their education. Since I do not have a reliable source of income, I aim to use the little amount I get from charcoal burning for food and save the money I get from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a father of twelve school-going children, life has not been a walk in the park. Three of them are in secondary school while nine are in primary school. Since I rely on charcoal burning, things have been tough on my side. Upon receiving the recent transfer, I paid $15 examination fees for the three secondary school children so that they could be allowed to do their exams. Since the drought has prolonged in our area, I opted to use the remaining $19 to buy some food so that my family could something to eat. This amount gave me a one-week rest from the tiring charcoal-burning business.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon the arrival of the transfers, my priority was to ensure that my family and I will catered for when it came to matters concerning nourishment especially with the ongoing drought that led to us sleeping hungry on most occasions. That is why I went ahead and used KES 1,600 from the transfers and bought a whole sack of maize because it would be less costly and would last longer compared to buying maize flour. I then proceeded to use KES 400 to purchase a kilogram of maize and beans.
I was left with a balance of KES 1,000 which I ended up spending on paying tuition for my ten kids because they were almost over on the verge of being kicked out of school.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As soon as I received the cash transfer, I opted to go ahead and look into nutrition and this is because drought had ensured that we had poor harvest which we happened to rely on for our day to day meals and not forgettingto mention that the cost of living had gone extremely high. So when I got the money I went ahead and bought five packets of maize flour using KES 1,000. I also bought a goat, which the owner happened to be selling at a throw away price of KES 1,000 since he seemed to urgently need the money. Lastly I used the balance of KES 1,000 and paid tuition fee for my two children since they had been home for a week now without attending school.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Before coming to contact with GiveDirectly times were very hard in my home. The kids would get kicked out of school very often and be home for a very long time but now I manage to pay their fees and keep them in school which is a very huge relief for me. Apart from that, providing a meal also was hard especially because of the size of the family, but I am grateful for the helping hand I get through the funds.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I got notified that the money had arrived I decide to pay school fees for two of my children because they were getting kicked out of school literally almost everyday just because I had yet to clear the tuition fee. Therefore paying their fees was almost a no-brainer. I gave the KES 1,000 to be split among them equally so that they could manage to attend class peacefully. As for what was left I used it solely on nutrition. Initially when I received the money I went ahead and bought four packets of maize flour which cost KES 50, but soon after it was all done because I have quite a large family and I had to use the KES 1,500 that was left to buy more maize flour which included and entire bag that contained a dozen packets. For the vegetables I got them from my own farm so that was barely a hustle.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Most times I deal in the business of selling firewood in bulk and that day like any other I had to fetch some since this was the means I used to feed my family. For instance on most occasions I would sell the firewood in schools and the money I received I would use it to pay for school fees mostly. The distance though was quite far around 10 kilometres and I would go on foot but it was worth it for the sole benefit of my family. I therefore was very happy when I received the money because on my way back home that day I did not even walk like I normally did but rather paid for transport because I had the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Through this funds I managed to pay school fees for my children which is very important to me because I strive for my kids to get education and knowledge in order to improve their lives and for the future and I also managed to provide a meal for the entire family considering that we are huge family and this made me grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I happen to have twelve kids who are in school so when I received the money I decided to cater for some of the tuition bills that I had so that to avoid the being sent back home from school. I picked five of them and paid KES 50 for which which totalled to KES 250 because I had also paid a small portion for the others a week before. I was nowhere near to finishing the school fee debt but I promised to keep paying bit by bit so that my children would be allowed to attend school. As for what was left I took KES 875 and bought seven packets of maize flour since we did not have any food left in the house and the children especially, needed something to eat when they came back from school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As a polygamous man, it has not been easy to take care of my family especially during this drought. I cut wood and sell them for a living and make 600KES on a good day. With a family of 13 children and 2 wives, this money is not enough to take care of their needs. I want to concentrate on buying food because the farm produces that was helping me to feed my family for many years was affected by the drought.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have gone through many challenges in my life for the past six months, but I thank God I am still alive with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Putting food on my table has been my biggest challenge so far especially with this current drought. The forest where I get wood and sell for a living is clearing day by day which means my source of living will soon be gone. This stresses me a lot because I have to find ways of taking care of my 13 children and 2 wives before it's too late.
