How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the near future and beyond. I am planning to hire a piece of land for farming as I own a smaller one. I will as well hire a tractor for farming instead of doing it with the help of casual labourers. This is cost-effective as compared to when it is done by the labourers. In addition, I have plans of starting up a groceries business to be run in the evenings. Groceries business has high demand as food is consumed on a daily basis. The profits earned will be enough for my young family's basic needs like food, clothing and school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, what GiveDirectly does well in this program is that we receive the transfers in lumpsum amounts. This helps in planning as one is in a position to do something huge as compared to when the transfers are given in small instalments. The unlearned recipients are taught how to use mpesa. This has reduced the number of theft cases in the community as most of us managed to change our pins to a more secure code. To avoid household conflict, what needs to be done differently is enrolling all the individuals in the household. During enrollment, those individuals who did not have responsibilities by then were left out of the program yet these are the same people who steal from their old and vulnerable parents. Give Directly staff are very transparent during the enrollment process, they are so keen during the verification process and this ensures that none is left out during registration to the program. Another thing that needs to be done differently is enrolling all the communities in a specific village for uniformity purposes and this will prevent too many complaints coming from the communities that are left out during the registration to the programs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the transfer, I never had a modern house, I owned a small grass-thatched house which was leaking during the rainy season. I thank Give Directly for the transfers as I managed to build a two-bedroom modern house for kshs 30,000 Initially, I never had peace of mind as it was so tiresome moving some of my valuable items during the rainy season, my young boys too never had adequate space to spend their nights and this was so stressful as they could sleep in a neighbour's house. My peace of mind is finally restored since I built a house. I am a University student, a third-year student studying Education. I used the remaining part of the transfers of kshs 23,000 to pay for my tuition fees

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the evening as I was running my errands at the market center. I could not help but see some of my neighbors excited about receiving funds that they all claimed to have received from Give directly. A state of confusion and disappointment filled the air for the few of us who kept checking our phones with nothing to show off and celebrate. I went home early that evening and waited patiently to see if it would turn to be my red later day. The night was interesting when I received a message around 9 pm that changed my life. I was alone in the house, but the excitement of the received funds made me stare at the roof, tossing and turning till in the morning.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is the purchase of the bull and the cow. In the next few months with proper feeds, this will be an opportunity to have a calf and an adequate supply of milk which will support me in my finances.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always wanted to own a dairy cow because it’s an opportunity to employ myself and an exciting opportunity to make money. I have been working as a casual laborer on construction sites which has not given me the financial freedom to have investments. When I received the cash, I used KES 45,000 to buy a bull and a cow. My plan is to keep them hoping to have them reproduce, which will be an increase in the number of livestock and an opportunity for me to sell milk. I also used the remaining cash to buy 90kg bag of maize for KES 4100 and paid for a foodstuff bought on credit in a nearby shop next to my home.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I graduated from Olesos Technical college in the year 2021, with a diploma in civil engineering. I was unable to get my diploma certificate due to a school fees balance of KES 23,000. When I receive money from GiveDirectly I am planning to clear the arrears first, this will allow me to venture into my career journey of being an engineer. For the remaining amount, I am planning to buy a good dairy cow with KES 40,000 this will give me 10litres of milk per day. At the moment milk per liter is KES 37, in a day I will earn KES 370. This will be of great importance to me since at the moment I do not have a stable source of income, I depend fully on casual jobs which earn me a very little amount I can not sustain my life fully due to the high cost of living in the country.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I had my final results for my certification in civil engineering and I performed so well. This brought me so much joy because it has always been my dream to be an engineer.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a stable job is my greatest challenge at the moment, I have always wished to venture into the dairy farming business but I do not have the capital to start up the business. When I receive money from GiveDirectly I will invest in dairy farming.
