How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I believe education is the key to make my children's life better thus I have to persist overwhelming needs to make sure that I pay their fee. I majorly depend on casual jobs and subsistence farming to raising an income to support ever-rising pressing family needs. I had seen myself lucky to have my children in school and colleges but raising their fees had been a big struggle for me with the limited resources I have. When I received GiveDirectly transfers, I was able to pay my children school fees. Currently, I am happy and hopeful since GiveDirectly has given me a handy hand to realize my goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done well in uplifting our lives which were miserable before enrollment. We have been able to provide for our families effectively, purchasing livestock as assets and most importantly, building better iron-roofed houses thus enjoying good shelter. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I value my children education knowing that this is the key to their better life in future. I spent the larger part of my transfer on my children education, to pay fee, house rents and school uniforms. I took another KES15000 to build my sons a good house. I am glad they no longer suffer seeking refugee in my neighborhood at night. In addition, I used some amount on my households daily basic needs.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to settle all my school fees as at now. This has brought total peace of mind for me and my husband who has been struggling with blood pressure for a long time now. This has brought a lot of happiness in my family. We have done several fund raisers to raise money to pay school fees for our children and even sold a fair share of our properties for our children. We felt we were becoming a bother to the people by asking them to support us every other time. We are grateful that they did and we are even more grateful that GiveDirectly came in handy to assist us as well.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so good when I received my transfer from GiveDirectly. That day,my daughter had just called me to request for money for payment of her school fees and I just told her that I never had any money then. The same day that night I got a message that I received a sum of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy that God had come through for us. I did not know what to do. I stood there standstill for sometime as I tried to internalize that I had really received the sum. It was until the next day that I finally called my daughter who was equally happy to receive the news.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I used KES 25000 to pay school fees for my two children who are in various colleges and used KES 15000 to gather for school fees for my children who are in secondary day schools back here at home. The remaining amount which is approximately KES 15000 was used to start up a small poultry keeping project that will enable me meet most of my basic needs without having to struggle like I have been doing. I entirely depend on casual to earn a living and this is sometimes so tiring to undertake. I normally get out of my home very early in the morning to go looking for any available casual work within the village and even outside the village to make ends meet at the end of the day. The money that I get is barely enough to buy food and we have always ended up with very little amount of money remaining to pay school fees. We have been dependent on fundraising to pay school fees for our children as well which has hardly been enough for us. This has led to the school fees accumulating and led to our children being sent home most of the time for lack of school fees. GiveDirectly transfer came in handy to help us close the gap of the huge school fee balance and this has made us so happy as a family. The poultry keeping project that I started shall help me a lot in reducing the amount of time that I spend on casual labour and enable me to relax and have a good time with family at home. I also bought a mattress and clothes for the family with the remaining amount of money. Going out doing casual jobs the whole day is tiring and one would want to at least have a sound sleep. This is something I have not enjoyed for years and I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the money we received that has made this happen.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Three years ago I used to do a small business of buying milk from the village and selling to other business people. The business collapsed due to lack of funds.Since Givedirectly has come to my rescue,I want to embark on this business.I am also targeting to buy beans from farmers which most of them have already planted and will be ready in a few months.I will then sell to business people who usually come to collect once they are gathered in large quantities.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Since I am a farmer,I spend the better part of the day around my farm.My first duty in the morning is milking and feeding my cattle. After my children go to school I go and work in my farm. For now I am weeding maize and beans. When its lunch time I prepare and have lunch and then go back to the farm to continue with the weeding for the rest of the afternoon. The happiest part of my day is in the evening seeing my children coming back from school happy.Thats when I term the day as successful since they are sometimes sent home early due to school fees arrears.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is having to struggle with education. This began with myself and has now transitioned to my children.I dropped out of school due to lack of school fees.My father passed on when I was in standard three and my mother could not manage paying school fees for all us beyond primary level.I believe that if I had at least completed college I could be in a better position to easily educate my children.Though I am trying my best,it is an uphill task.My husband supports me but it is still not enough since I am the second wife and therefore he has the other family to take care of.My dream is seeing my children complete college, get employed so that their children and the generation to come can also get good education.Education is the key to a bright future which we all want for our children.
