How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have new plans. First of all, I am planning to invest more in poultry farming. This will enable me to get capital for livestock selling. This will not only be a source of income for household expenses but also school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well to give hope to the hopeless in our community. For example, those who couldn't afford food now have access to food. Secondly, those who couldn't pay fees are now able through GiveDirectly transfers. Additionally, the enrollment process was transparent.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of four and I have been working as a casual laborer on a flower farm for the past three years. And every month, I get pay of KES 7000 per month which feeds my family and schools my kids. Since I got my job I have desired to have a dairy cow but couldn't afford it. This is because I work far away from home and from my salary I normally pay my rent in addition to sending remittances to my family. All along since I married I have been depending on my parents for milk. And on dry spells, we normally buy two cups of milk at KES 30 from the milk vendors. Therefore, when I received my first transfer I bought a dairy cow which is due in a few weeks. And recently, when I received the second transfer I also bought a heifer at KES 30,000. This means increased milk production once it reproduces. Secondly, I furnished my house with four sets of modern furniture at KES 15,000. These are more comfortable compared to the locally made benches which we had earlier. Lastly, I used KES 8,000 on repayment of a maize debt. I also spent KES 3,000 on the purchase of a bag of maize which has sustained us for the past month and the remainder will sustain us for the next month.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The happiness after receiving a message from GiveDirectly that confirmed the receipt of the first transfer was immeasurable. I was with my spouse when the message pop-up came in and on reading it, I could not believe my eyes. We had to make several confirmations to a point of checking the account balance first. It was a great morning for us that we had to revisit our plans, and since we had a lot to do, we withdrew in bits as we execute all that we had in the book.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Obtaining a lactating cow that has been providing us with enough milk since I received the first transfer has been the biggest difference in my daily life. I am glad that the huge spending that we had been experiencing stopped the moment I bought a dairy cow. At the moment, I have been able to provide other household goods with ease using the saved amount that I would have used on buying milk.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For the past three years, I had been working hard every day in and out to ensure that I earn at least some income to provide for my family of five. Just like any other job, I would sometimes miss making me drain all the savings I had to buy at least a liter of milk for my children. With my relatively big family without a cow on the field that would provide us with a consistent source of milk had never been easy. The expenses of milk when the children are still young. On receiving the first transfer, we prioritized obtaining a lactating dairy cow at KES 35000 that has served us with enough milk since then. I also obtained a new piece of furniture to replace the uncomfortable old wooden benches that we had been using. With the promise that we had given to our children after enrolling in the program, I had to give my wife KES 6000 that she ensured that every member of the household gets a new outfit. I spent the remaining amount on obtaining enough foodstuff for my family and I am glad that we are still having some that we bought on the first day.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Milk is in high demand and paying in our area, this money gives me hope in venturing into dairy farming which will help me tap more income from the sale of milk which will improve our lives. To achieve this dream I will plan KES 70000 to buy two dairy cows to start this enterprise, my wife is also passionate about tailoring but with our little earnings from our casual jobs which is about KES 300 daily, she is unable to enroll in a tailoring course. Now with the help of this money, I will use KES 20000 to support her to enroll in this course at Chebunyo Technical Training Institute and this will help her achieve her dream of starting a tailoring business. I will therefore use the remaining amount to buy food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of the day, this time I am done with my job and I have something in my pocket to buy food for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints to support my family has been a big challenge for me, this is mainly because I rely on a casual job of farm weeding to earn a living. This job earns me about KES 300 per day which only goes to family basic needs. I end up saving nothing or even unable to start a developmental activity.
