How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I used to walk long distances to fetch water which at times was not safe for domestic use. This exposed us to water born diseases like typhoid that made us to seek treatments that were expensive and we could not afford at times. Nowadays, I have clean water by my doorstep in a water tank that I bought with the transfers. I also managed to pay school fees for my son who is in college without stress and worries as before. At least I have hope for the future as education is the best inheritance a parent can give to a child. Thanks to GiveDirectly that came handy to lift us up from poverty.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave hope to the hopeless. People have built good houses, paid school fees in arrears, bought food, invested on small scale businesses and farming. l have not experienced anything that it never did well worth mentioning.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the transfer to buy a water tank that I intend to harvest and store rain water in with hope of selling to the neighbors during dry season. We have water problem in this community since there is no permanent river closer. I spent the remaining part to buy a cow that is soon calving. The cow will provide me with milk and ghee that will improve on food security and nutrition for my family as I also intend to sell the surplus and save the money to pay school fees for my son who is in college.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my son is in school. I do not have to worry anymore about where to get school fees given that I managed to pay the whole arrears.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received this money I was so happy. I confirmed that GD does not make empty promises.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer on paying school fees for my son who is in high school. He owed the school some arrears and also bought a cow for rearing. The remaining amount I spent on buying the building materials that I am using to build a new kitchen after the one had collapsed.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my three children who are in high school and college will not miss classes since we shall use the cash transfer to settle their fees areas. Its in our hope that once our child finishes college, she will be able to get a job and help us in paying fees to her siblings.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is usually during the afternoon as am able to meet fellow villagers and engage them. Talking to neighbors and friends creates the joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is difficulty in feeding my family since I sold the last maize I got from the farm to pay school fees to the children. I have ended up at times going to sleep without having any meals.
