How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming season, I aim to change my approach to agriculture by embracing modern farming techniques, including the use of fertilizers and tractors for tilling the land. My primary goal is to enhance food security for my family by significantly increasing our agricultural yield. I'm counting on my son, who has pledged to contribute additional funds during the rainy season, which will enable me to procure enough food for our needs. Until now, I've been limited to traditional farming methods due to financial constraints, but I'm hopeful that this shift will bring about positive changes for us in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The beauty of the unconditional cash transfer lies in its flexibility – it acknowledges that individuals know their needs best. Everything about the process has been smooth, and the freedom to decide how to allocate the funds has been instrumental in transforming my circumstances. Honestly, I wouldn't change a thing about the approach.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $300 of the second transfer to pay hospital bills for my husband who was terribly sick. Sadly, he passed away. Now, I've decided to buy three goats with the $200 left. I believe they can help me financially when they multiply multiply. I'm a businesswoman selling herbs, making about $15 in a good week. My son helps our family, but sometimes he can't, so I have to support my grandchildren with school fees when my kids can't.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home, seeking refuge from the relentless sun that baked our humble dwelling. As I rested, a sudden chime from my phone pierced the air, and I handed it over to my grandson, who had become my lifeline in this digital age. He read aloud the message with a twinkle in his eye; it was the first transfer from GiveDirectly. In that moment, a surge of emotions welled up within me, and tears of joy blurred my vision. It was more than just money; it was hope, dignity, and the promise of a better tomorrow. I felt like the sun, which had been so harsh, had suddenly transformed into a warm, nurturing embrace, wrapping our family in a cocoon of happiness and possibility.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I remember the day we received that cash transfer from GiveDirectly like it was yesterday. It was a lifeline that changed our lives in ways I can't even put into words. My heart swelled with gratitude because that money meant I could finally afford the medication my ailing husband desperately needed. Watching him regain his strength and smile again brought tears of joy to my eyes. But it wasn't just about the medicine; it was about not having to go to bed hungry anymore. No more empty stomachs and worried nights, we could put food on the table every day. That gift from GiveDirectly was like a ray of sunshine after a long, night, and it filled our lives with hope, health, and happiness.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving cash assistance from GiveDirectly made a significant impact on my life. My husband had been unwell for a long time, and we couldn't afford the medical care he needed. Upon receiving the transfer, I didn't hesitate. I used $100 to get him the medication he required. Today, I am so thankful and happy because he's finally on the path to recovery.
Before, our living conditions were far from comfortable. Our bed was old and broken, and our bedding was worn out. But with $110, I was able to purchase a modern standard bed and a comfortable mattress. Now, I sleep well and wake up refreshed, and it's made a big difference in our lives. Additionally, I invested in our family's security by buying a grill door for $55, giving us peace of mind. I also decided to start a goat-rearing project by purchasing two goats for $80, which I hope will provide a steady income for our family in the future. With the remaining funds, I bought enough food to ensure our family was well-nourished and saved some for our future needs. Thanks to GiveDirectly, our lives have improved significantly, and we are filled with gratitude for the support we received.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of two members and I am happy that my husband and I are aging together. I do subsistence farming and the husband can not work anymore because he suffers from prostate problem. I have been desirng to take him for medication but due to financial shortage I have never. I will use $700 to take him to hospital for medication. I will be happy when he heals up and resume to his responsibility of taking care of the family. I will also use $200 to buy beddings and put a door to my house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I do subsistence farming and my community had drought for the last four years. Luckily on April 2023 we received rain and I planted maize crops on my one acre piece of land. The harvest is now doing well and I am happy that I have enough food for the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been suffering from ulcers for years now. I have getting medication from the nearby hospital but still in vain. I can not engage myself on hard activities nowadays. This is the challenge I am currently facing in life.
