How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current objective is to open a shop where I would offer items that are in high demand, like food. Since there are just a few people in our area doing this type of business, it has less competition. As producing and selling charcoal has become unstable owing to the lack of trees in our area, the goal of this business is to generate income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I appreciate GiveDirectly for sending me cash transfers without any conditions. The money helped my family by buying food and covering my kids' tuition, which lessened the challenges they were going through. In addition, the money paid for my hospital bills when I got sick. I'm not sure what would have happened to my health if GiveDirectly hadn't existed. I don't see anything that the organization could do better,
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I got the second transfer, I was going through a difficult time. I was so ill that I was unable to leave the house to work and support my family. I prioritized getting the right care, and I spent at least $100 on medication. I also bought a cow for $260. I decided to invest by purchasing the cow. My children had some unpaid school fees, so I made a $100 payment for them so they could continue their education. I was compelled to use the remaining money only for food, ensuring that my family had access to regular meals.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3 pm when I received a message on my phone while at a burial of a relative. Despite being unable to read, I mastered what M-Pesa messages look like and I can easily know once I receive money in My account though I will not know how much it is. Upon checking on the message, I knew I had received some money. The amount and the source of the money remained a puzzle to me. Through my helper, I realized that I had received $550 fromGiveDirectly. My heart was engulfed in happiness and thanksgiving. I could not ululate since the environment could not allow but inwardly I ululated loudly. All this happiness was brought by the fact that I had gotten a solution to a problem that was depriving me of my peace of mind. My secondary school child was almost dropping out of school due to a lack of school fees.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Sincerely speaking, I was stuck with my child who is in secondary school. I had done all that I could in vain and the child was on the verge of dropping because of school fees. I am very grateful for the help I received from GiveDirectly because it rescued my child’s education. As of now, I am somehow relieved because completing his secondary education successfully will be a history made at my home and my desire will have been fulfilled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a housewife mother of eight children, and a casual laborer husband life has not been easy. My husband and I have been struggling in charcoal burning all through to make ends meet, unfortunately getting the basic needs for our children remained a big challenge. My seven children dropped out of school since I could not afford to pay for their school fees. The eighth one was also on the verge of dropping out, lucky for the transfer from GiveDirectly. Upon withdrawing the money, I first paid $250 for school fees for my child so that he could be retained in school. I count this as an achievement because this money will see him complete his secondary education. As a parent, I am very happy because he will be a pillar of the family if all goes well. Thereafter, I bought a nice standard bed and a mattress for $140 because I used to sleep on a traditional bed which was uncomfortable. To place a mark of GiveDirectly at my home, I bought a she-goat for $40. Since food has also been a challenge to provide for the family, I opted to use the remaining amount to buy some foodstuff for them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better future for my children. This is because have desired to educate them to University. I have even been worried about realizing my dream but with the arrival of Givedirectly to our village, I am optimistic about materializing my dream. I am planning to spend KES 20000 to pay school fees for my daughter in secondary school. This will allow her to settle in school hence good performance. I will further use KES 15000 to buy a modern bed and mattress to avoid the cold floor. The remaining amount of my transfers will be invested in livestock farming because it is the only way I can save my money to earn a profit when I sell them after they multiply.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I will lying saying that I am happy. This is because for the last six months I was nursing my mum. Unfortunately in month of April, my mum departed this life. But the fact that I wake up healthy of body and sound is something that makes me happy and I am grateful to the Almighty God for the gift of life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing this has forced me to engage in charcoal work to support my children's educational needs. This job is tiresome and time-consuming. My earnings from this business are as little as KES 1000- 2000 per month and can not be enough to fully support the family's basic needs as well as pay their school fees. We occasionally skipped meals or borrow from relatives something that stresses me a lot.
