How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I did depend on causal jobs for a living and the income is meager to support all my family's needs since it's just 100 KES on a day. Apparently, we would miss meals and milk to complement our meals, this situation used to depress me as I saw my children miserably hopeless. My life has instantly changed since I received GiveDirectly's transfers in that I purchased a dairy cow that gives three liters of milk enough for sale and my household consumption. I am glad that my children's nutrition status is getting better physically and psychologically as they are all over the compound playing with laughter and joy as compared to before when they were underweight and unhappy.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well money giving money directly to beneficiary that improved my entire society since majority of the beneficiaries bought livestock , built houses and paid school fees to their children therefore those who had drop out of school got an opportunity to enrolled back to school. I do not see what GiveDirectly did wrong at their work.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the second transfer on buy dairy cow 33,000 KES and I am able to have milk that my family consumes on a daily basis hence they are healthier and stronger. I employed modern mechanisms in the preparation of farm for planting which has enabled me to complete all the stages of cultivation on time. I bought food for my family's consumption with the remaining amount.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I depend on casual jobs in the village to earn living and support my family. I am lucky to have a piece of land but I had felt ashamed of neglecting this precious resource due to lack of resource to make good use of. I was not in a position to prepare well my piece of land, get quality seeds and fertilizers and always found myself doing things later. I had put my family in hunger since poor cultivation of my piece of land led to poor yield that couldn't sustain us to the subsequent harvesting season. I had been worried about how best I could improve on this but the little resource I had never gave me a chance to work on this. I felt more ashamed and demoralized every time we had a food shortage and had to spend a lot on food while our piece of land is lying idle. The biggest difference in my daily life is that I feel empowered to make good use of my piece of land. I have made good progress in farming in that I have employed better methods of land preparation, observe time, use of hybrid seeds and artificial fertilizer. I am happy and hopeful that I will have a better harvest come next harvesting season. I have devoted much of time to my farm and this has made me relax and happy that I have a good time in my family unlike before.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was around 3 AM when I heard an incoming message notification from my phone. When I checked it, I was surprised by the content that indicated I had received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately called my spouse who was away from home to inform about the good new. He was so happy and promised to come home the following morning we budgeted the money together.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I engage in both farming and casual jobs to be able to meet in my family's needs. It has been so demoralizing for me to spend much of my time and efforts on my neighbor's farm while I had mine but I could change the situation due to the magnitude of my daily needs. Food shortage has been our regular crisis in the family due to our poor yields. When I received my first transfer, I took a portion of it to improve my farming. I am happy that I was able to prepare well, observe time and used quality farm inputs thus I am expecting better yields. I am hopeful that soon my family will be free from food shortage. I took part it to buy a heifer. I settle on this since I see it as a living asset that I can always lean on in case of financial need and have milk from for both household consumption and sales. My husband is masonry and he has maximized this skill to support us. I took part in my first transfer to buy him masonry tools to make is work more efficient and effect5ive to help us it the family. I spent the remaining amount on farming to pay casual workers to help in farming and on my family basic needs mainly food and clothung to add to what we had.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Livestock play a massive role in paying for our children's education in my community. Since enrolling my first born child in a private primary school three years ago, my one dairy cow has been my source of income for her fees. Our second born is set to begin school in the same institution come January next year. For this reason, I am going to invest my first transfer in purchasing another dairy cow for increased source of income to cater for the impending increase in school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband is a skilled mason who goes to work every day from morning till evening. This means all the domestic chores are my burden to bear since early morning, some of which include feeding livestock, weeding in the farm, doing laundry and collecting firewood. When he comes home in the evening he relieves me of some duties. This is my moment to interact with my children and revitalize. This is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My community is located in an ASAL area from which during drought suffers a fair share of adversities. Livestock is the major backbone of the economy and livelihood of our people. When drought strikes, we are forced to walk for miles to look for pasture and water for their survival. Some of them succumb to starvation and drained energy along the way. During such times, milk production rapidly plummets leading to malnutrition and children dropping out of school thanks to lack of source of income. Life is totally disrupted during this season. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life.
