How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My initial goal was to spend my transfer on buying a cow. Since I gave birth to my first born, I have been having some difficulties in getting milk even for my children when they need it most, owing to the fact that my family does not own any cow. Upon completing my initial goal, I developed another goal of buying a parcel of land at KES 40,000. This goal was achieved as a result of the second transfer. I am so happy because acquiring a parcel of land is a big milestone in my life. Before I build a new house in it, I shall be farming crops in it with an aim of boosting my harvest.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well not only in creating awareness of its program to potential recipients, but also in sending to them unconditional cash transfer. As a result, most if the recipients make thoughtful decisions and they spend their transfers on meeting their pressing needs. In addition, GD staffs are respectful hence they harmoniously work among various communities. So far, I have not seen what GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 from my most recent transfer on buying a parcel of land. Previously, I did not have any parcel of land where I could do my farming. Instead, I could occasionally lease a parcel at a cost. Since I am a single mother, having my own parcel of land is of a great value because through this, my sons will be able to have a space to build their houses. Getting out of my maIernal home will actually restore my dignity in the society where I live. Despite the fact that am not married, owning a home in itself will be a great honour. Thanks to GiveDirectly for such a timely help.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I woke up very early in the morning to a message on my phone bearing great news from GiveDirectly that came in the previous night at around 11:00 pm. I could not hear the message notification alert since I was fast asleep but the morning news was so exciting as well that after confirming the account balance, I could not hold back my joy. Together with my family we celebrated and thanked God that morning for the support that would transform my family's standard of living.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the availability of plenty of foodstuff in the household for my family of three and the ease of sourcing more after bringing in two sacks and a lactating cow that has been serving us at least two liters a day - enough for our household use and to sell some when I need to. I am grateful for this support from GiveDirectly that has improved my standard of living a lot.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A dream to finally own a lactating dairy cow that would stop the perennial buying of milk and begging from my parents and other close family members for some liters every day finally came to an end when I received the transfer from GiveDircely. Just after collecting the money from the nearby shopping center, I spent KES 30000 on securing a dairy cow that has been giving us at least two liters every morning. I also spent KES 8200 on buying three sheep that I am hoping to see grow, multiply, and help me in the future payment of school fees for my two children. With the remaining amount, I managed to spend 1500 KES on obtaining new pairs of clothes for my two children and mine, paid their school fees worth KES 1200, purchased two sacks of maize at KES 6400 that we have been using all along since that day, and transferred the remaining amount to a fixed saving account with the plan of starting a small business in the future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My parents gave me one of their houses to raise my children with now that I was not privileged to be married. This is making my life difficult since I do not have my land and house. With this money, I will prioritize buying a piece of land building a house with KES 80000. I will also consider buying a calf with KES 20000 to enable me to have sustainable household income through the production and sale of milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My health has been good for the last six months, this allowed me to work hard and provide food for my children. This made me feel happy as I am the sole breadwinner.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am the sole breadwinner for my family, this makes me struggle a lot to provide food and school fees to my children. I am currently relying on what I earn from my grocery to feed my family, challenges come in handy when I make a little sale in a day. This implies that I will get little profit and thus little income for the family.
