How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to start a boutique business where I would sell second-hand clothes to earn income to support my basic needs like food. This is a job that does not require a lot of effort which is suitable for me because I am currently under medication.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in sending the cash transfer directly to the phones of the poor households. This has reduced any fraud and corruption. Additionally, we had the freedom to use the transfer in the best ways we choose. I can say there is nothing that they did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 3500 to purchase a water barrel, I will use it to store enough clean water for the family. Previously, I had small buckets which could not store enough drinking water. In addition, I use KES 3000 to support my 2 kids' educational needs by clearing their fee arrears. Currently, they are still in lower primary. Furthermore, I use KES 10,000 to seek proper medical care for myself. I had been diagnosed with a chronic skin illness that is characterized by itching skin all over my body. Currently, I am feeling better after undergoing the treatment. Lastly, I used KES 20,000 to boost my goat keeping, by purchasing 4 more goats. This is my long-term investment and I intend to sell them when they multiply to cater for any needs that might arise in the future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 AM when I had finished taking my breakfast and I was just relaxed. Then I saw a message notification on my mobile phone, but because I am illiterate, I asked my daughter to check who it was. I was overwhelmed with joy when she informed me that I had finally received my first transfer as had been promised earlier during the first visit. I remember sharing the good news with all my family members with much enthusiasm and joy on my face. We knew our lives will never be the same again courtesy of GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is now happy and my health is good. I have been ailing for quite some time but becasue of the inadequate finances to fund the proper medication, I could not add to visit any hospital. All I have doing just take the painkiller which was not helpful at all. My life has been full of sorrows because of the pain I could feel I wasn't able to do any house chores. Being jobless worsens the situation because I used to solely depend on my spouse who didn't have a permanent job. Sometimes getting the daily meal was not achievable and this even made my condition worse. Life was really tough then, I had even lost hope in life. Looking at my three children going to school becasue of my condition was also stressful. Therefore after receiving the cash transfers I had to prioritize the issue of my health. I am now glad and thankful because I feel relieved after visiting the doctor. I can now finally do the normal house chores and everything that I couldn't do when I was sick.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on paying school fees for my three children who are in primary schools. Previously he used to be sent home more often due to fee arrears which used to stress me a parent. In addition to that, I bought a water tank ( 240 liters) at KES 2500 which will help me in harvesting and storing rainwater since there is a shortage of water in my village. Later on, I managed to also clear my medical bills since I have been sick for a long period. However, I did not have enough funds to and I am glad I go I after getting proper checking, I am now recovering. I spent the remaining amount of money on foodstuff which would last us up to the next season.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security for my family. I have a 4 acre piece of land for agriculture. During rain season I cultivate three acres . I do pay Ksh . 6000 to my neighbor who has oxen for agriculture. He does it for me after he is done with his piece of land. This makes me sometimes fail to get good harvest due to late cultivation. I harvest six bags of 90kg each from the three acres of land. This lasts for five months. I want to buy two oxen and a yoke at a cost of Ksh. 50000. I will use Ksh. 30000 to buy two cows for dairy farming. I will also use the remaining amount to pay school fees for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest Part of the day is in the morning. Seeing every morning is not something for granted. It takes God's protection to see another day. That is why am happy every morning even if I do not have breakfast to take.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the year 2019 I fell sick immediately after giving birth. The sickness dried up my milk such that my child had nothing to eat. My husband had to buy milk from the neighbor's home so as to feed the baby. That made my child to grow very weak. She almost died . That's the biggest hardship I faced in life.
