In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We are grateful because life in our neighborhood has improved and become more bearable as a result of GD operations. It does a good job of providing financial assistance to our people. Its transfers are unconditional and contribute to poverty alleviation. GiveDirectly is not good at distributing varying amounts of money to different people.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been living at home since I got involved in a road accident in June 2021. As a result, when I got my transfer, I decided to start raising chickens and growing crops. I had been longing to expand my poultry farming since I used my first transfer to purchase a chicken. As a result, I spent KES 500 on a second chicken, and I am delighted I now have two. I also spent KES 500 on chicken feed, which improves their nutrition and allows them to grow quickly and begin laying eggs. Since my wife and six children are away from home, the rest are assisting me in obtaining food for daily consumption.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I received my transfer, I felt super excited. That was a real intervention that God had made specifically for me. I did not have any money for preparing my farm yet all the people were busy in their farms. I had already begun to worry on how I would prepare my shamba because my right hand is non-functional. With the transfer, I was therefore cock-sure that at long last, it would be fully prepared in readiness for planting.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to prepare my farm for planting season is the biggest difference I have faced in life. Since I have not fully recovered, I am always unable to work on my own farm. Receipt of the transfer at such a time was a perfect timing because it all helped me to engage someone to work for me. I am therefore optimistic that when we experience a good rainy season, I shall be able to get a good harvest for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have just been at home and unable to engage in any hard labour. I was involved in a road accident barely two years ago, a situation that resulted in my right hand being non functional. Therefore, upon receiving the transfer, I spent it on preparing my farm for the forthcoming planting season. I also bought a hen, which I am planning to rare among the other poultry birds I had begun buying. The rest of the transfer is currently helping me in terms of acquiring daily meals since I am unable to work. I only rely on my wife for support though she is always away from home and engaged in business.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I got an accident and had a fractured hand, the injury made me stop working because my work at construction sites involved lifting things that I could no longer do. This misfortune disoriented my life and forced my wife to start taking care of the family responsibilities. I do not want to continue living in despair this is why I plan to start poultry keeping and start selling when they multiply then use the money to buy livestock for keeping. Receiving this money will give me a sense of belonging because now I feel lost due to my disability.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy that I survived the fatal accident that I was involved in last year July after seeking medication. This also brought happiness and joy to my family even if I cannot be of help to my wife.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife had to take all the responsibilities in the family when I was bedridden as a result of an accident. Seeing her struggle with finances and I cannot do anything to help is frustrating. My two children in high school are always on and off school because of fees arrears and sometimes pocket money. Therefore the challenge I currently face in life is lack of money to offload some of the responsibilities from my wife.
