How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For now, my ambition is to launch a sardine-selling business. I chose this line of work not only because there is less rivalry nearby, but also because starting one only needs a small amount of money. Generating revenue is the goal of this business. Acquiring a business would start a new chapter in my life because I don't have any other sources of income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I believe GiveDirectly performed admirably throughout my entire village because the officers went to every home and enrolled everyone without discrimination. It was also the best since it taught most of us how to handle money sensibly. We were taught how to spend money according to our desires. I consequently do not identify any areas where GiveDirectly fell short.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was really ill by the time I received the second transfer. I am happy that the transfer allowed me to seek medical attention. Because I couldn't afford medicine, I was merely lying in bed at home when it helped me. Although I am unable to accurately estimate the cost of the treatment, I can be proud that GiveDirectly's transfer allowed me to recover. After that, I spent $35 on a goat and used the rest of the money for food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I heard my neighbours talking about money that had been sent to them by GiveDirectly. Since I couldn't read any message on my phone, I called my helper who checked for me. He disclosed to me the good news that I had also received my first transfer. I felt happy and thanked God for using GiveDirectly to transform our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I was in distress because I could not raise money to help my grandson to further his studies. He performed well in his high school examination and his goal was to go to college, get a diploma and be able to secure a good employment in the future. I sought assistance from government offices but I could not get any help. I do not have a source of income that could at least help him get to college. When GiveDirectly came, I could now breath a sigh of relief after they sent us the financial support. I was able to save a bigger portion of the transfer to pay for the tuition fee which also gave me ample time to prepare for the consecutive terms. Seeing my grandson going to college is so far the biggest difference in my daily life. He would be at home now had I not received the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My grandson had completed his high school and I was unable to take him to college to further his studies. His ambition was to complete his studies and be able to secure an employment in future since having a high school certificate is not enough to secure a good employment in our country. He is under my care and I could not readily raise the money for his school fees. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for coming to help because through the first transfer, I managed to save Ksh. 20000 for his tuition fee. I am glad that he has an opportunity to further his studies and reach his educational goals. In addition to this, I also bought two goats at KSH. 7000 which I am currently keeping on my homestead. These are assets that I can rely on for my grandchildren's education. I spent the remaining amount to do a shopping on new clothes and purchased enough foodstuffs that could take us for weeks. My family was able to take three meals a day unlike before when we could skip meals because food was not enough.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a source of wealth in my life. I plan to achieve this through livestock rearing. I will spend KES 30000 to 10 indegious goats. I will later sell them at a profit and save the money for rainy days. I will further spend KES 40000 to support my grandchild's education who will be joining college on July. The remaining amount will cater for other household expenses like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful for the gift of life. This is because for the last six months I have been grieving the loss of my siblings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is financial instability. This is because I am doing causal jobs of selling firewood. The job earns me KES 300 per week. Due to this, I have been struggling to provide for my family. Sometimes, I fail to put on the table and I am forced to borrow from relatives, something that does not give me a peace of mind.
