How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As the family breadwinner and a father of ten, my desired accomplishment in the coming years is to ensure that the family got a good education, that is, to educate them to a point they complete their college education so that they have their own career path to sustain them in the future. I am planning to achieve this by ensuring that I continue with farming which is currently our primary source of income among casual painting jobs which is very unreliable. I am currently providing strong support to farming in order to ensure the mass production of short-season crops such as beans, vegetables, and Irish potatoes. These are not only for our own consumption, but we will also sell the surplus to generate income. In the long run, I believe the savings from farming activities will be useful in purchasing more cows to add to my current number of cattle. As a result, I would be able to sell some to generate fees for my children. I am also looking forward to buying a plot on a budget of $600 in the next 5 years so that I can build enough rooms for my 10 children, it is good to have female and male children share the same sleeping room due to the need to have privacy. Girls and boys having their own separate rooms will in turn boost their self-esteem as well privacy will be enhanced.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
A lot has changed since GiveDirectly started its program in the village. Many people lived in old structures with mud walls and grass roofs before the transfers, this is no longer the case since many repaired their old houses with new iron sheets, many took their children to colleges, and many bought more cattle hence the improved relationship among households and village members. The villagers currently look smarter since many started to embrace fashion. I am glad that we now have electricity because of GiveDirectly something that made my 10 children's performance in class improve since they can do night studies and homework without the struggle of using an old light chimney which wasn't environmentally friendly. We are also happy that the process was fair and transparent since GiveDirectly did use political intermediaries in giving out unconditional transfers, it was direct cash transfers. However, GiveDirectly should also try not to use chiefs' opinions in selecting people since some fail to provide names of those who have bought lands in the village and hence became part of the village. GiveDirectly should also consider checking the phones being provided to the villagers since it seems most of the villagers experiences challenges with their since they are short term-lived, we sometimes feel that the phones are only given to receive the transfers after that they get spoilt.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Second transfer came at the right time, my children had been sent back home for fees. I have 10 children, two in tertiary, and 8 in secondary. It was uneasy to pay fees since we only depended on painting jobs and small-scale farming which is unreliable. I felt frustrated to see a drop in my children performance since they would be sent home to collect fees twice every week. As a result, I cleared their fees arrears of $320 and I am glad to report a great improvement in their class performance, more study time. Furthermore, I also had the privilege to install electricity using $ 100. For the longest time, the village has been living in despair without electricity due to the high cost of installation. I am happy that I currently save a lot, due to no cost associated with moving to and fro among my 2 children to do their online courses and exams in cyber everyday, electricity light made studies easy. In addition, I also bought furniture, using $500, before, we used traditional woods as seats, something that caused a lot of backbone pain, I am happy that the family no longer experiences the challenge. I also spent $120 of the remaining on food for my family of 12 as well as new clothing. We have been struggling to feed the family due to drought and famine, on many occasions, we would skip meals but not anymore since we got the transfers, instead, the health of the family improved due to good eating habits.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy when I received a message that confirmed the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was with my sons at home for the second day after being sent from school to collect their fees. On informing them, they were excited and assured that they were going back to school the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the relief after paying school fees for my two sons in secondary school. This money gave me another chance to work on other projects that will help in the future bills in my household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Paying school fees has been a burden on my family. Keeping the elder two in secondary school has been a challenge, but glad that this was relieved after receiving the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I spent KES 45000 to clear both arrears and part of the current term fees which have given them hope and peace of mind as they study. I also spent KES 5000 on obtaining a new piece of furniture and the remaining amount on buying iron sheets that I later donated to the church for construction work. I am glad that the substantial burden has been reduced and am ready to work on other projects that will support my family in the future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
School fees is the heaviest burden that is on my shoulders as we speak. I have 4 children who are in school, two in college and the rest in highschool. The best investment any parent can have is to take children through school and I will go to any length to see that happen. I am a painter who paints newly constructed houses and sometimes these jobs are hard to comeby because of few people who build such houses. The much I can earn per day is KES 500 and even if I save the entire amount it cannot be sufficient to sustain four of my children in school. I am always up and down borrowing money to finance the deficit since the total school fees is more than KES 100,000 for all the children. Receiving this money will relieve me the stress of borrowing money as I intend to spend my entire transfer on paying my children's school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It is double blessings in this village because other than the GiveDirectly project, there is another project that is funded by the world bank where everyone is going to be connected to electricity. I have an electricity pole that has been erected right outside my house and this indicates that sooner or later I am going to get connected. This makes me super happy and I cannot be thankful enough.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is the main challenge that I face currently. I am a painter and these jobs are hard to find because people do not construct permanent houses because of the high cost that comes with it. I am forced to search far and wide and many at times I am unsuccessful. Coming home to my family empty handed is the most painful experience any parent can go through
