In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I commend Give Directly because of their efforts to helping the needy in the society. I am happy that these transfers will change my life and many of the villagers. Sending direct and unconditional transfer is something good. This helps me plan in relation to the needs that I have.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is currently the sole breadwinner in our family. Together with him, we earned our living from tilling other people’s land. Since the drought begun, the jobs became scarce. It is almost a year now, and I haven’t been able to work or get a job. My husband has now turned to burning of woods and making charcoal for sale. The amount of money he earns is not enough to feed us and save to attend to other needs. In the middle of last year, our house walls started cracking up. The rain we received at the end of the year made things worse. The wooden poles are now rotten and the house is now kneeling towards one side. To salvage the situation, I used my all the transfer of KSH 3000 and an addition from husbands transfer. We bought some cement and stones and started building some cement pillars for the house to prevent it from coming down. I have for the longest time wanted to repair the house but to due to lack of finances, that was not possible. I even became the laughingstock of the village, because of the poor condition of the house. It is for this reason that I have the zeal to renovate the house and stay in a pleasant house like the other people.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning and I had just woken up. While I was sweeping my house I heard a notification sound from my phone. I quickly went to check it out. I found out that I had received the text message. Since I am illiterate I went to my husband and asked him to read and tell me what the text message was all about. It is at this moment that my husband informed me that I had received my transfer. I was very happy and even started ululating hard enough and I even attracted the attention of my neighbors’. Later that day after discussing with my husband the proper way to use the money he went ahead and withdrew the money and I went and deposited it at the Chama.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Yes, the money has made a big difference in my life. I can now be optimistic that I will soon have a good and big house. This has motivated me to even work hard to source other funds so that I can complete building the house and move in with my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always wanted to build a new and strong house for me and my family. My house is made of mud walls. The roof is made of Makuti. The vertical poles have since been weak and have made my house start sinking on one side. This has made me act and want to build another house before I am rendered houseless. When I received the first transfer I decided to save the whole KSH 3000 amount in a Chama. This will in turn help me get a loan that I will now use to build my house. I am planning to first buy cement and use it to build bricks. Once the bricks are enough to finish the construction of the two-bedroom house and a verandah, I will now get the mason and start building the house. Once the lower part is done, I will again save some amount and buy some iron sheets and timber and then finish building the roof.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Having a permanent house has been my ambition. The house structure that I live in is weak and temporary, sticks and mud that used to build it worn out, it is twenty years up to now since I built it. My son, who is the breadwinner sends money that only affords me to purchase foodstuff. For this reason, I plan to save to build a new strong structure finally, I will have a peaceful night.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy in the morning because I have woken up healthy and safe. At night I feel more scared about whether our house will collapse or something.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of funds has been a great hardship in life. My husband and I depend on farms that turned infertile due to drought. Our children who work in town as casual laborers remit little money that caters for food only of which I cannot afford to save to build a better house. The house that we currently live in is too old and any time can be carried by a strong wind, in addition, I am always sick, sometimes I have no money to seek medication.
