How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As a parent, my greatest aim is to secure a bright and promising future for my children through education. Once I have the financial means, I dream of providing them with the best possible education, from primary school to college. I envision enrolling them in quality schools that nurture their passions and talents while instilling strong values and a sense of responsibility. I want them to have access to a diverse range of subjects and extracurricular activities that help them explore their interests and potential. Through hard work and dedication, I will ensure that they receive the guidance they need to excel in their studies and prepare them for higher education. Witnessing my children blossom into confident, well-rounded individuals with limitless opportunities will be my proudest accomplishment and the greatest legacy I can leave for the world.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Having personally received assistance from GiveDirectly, I must say that I am immensely grateful for the support they provided. The organization's staff members were exceptional in their approach, showing professionalism and empathy throughout the process. I was impressed by their commitment to impartiality, ensuring that no biases influenced the selection of beneficiaries. This instilled a sense of trust and satisfaction among all the recipients in our village. To further enhance the impact of their program, I would recommend allocating additional time and resources to ensure that every eligible recipient gets the opportunity to benefit from GiveDirectly's invaluable assistance. Overall, my experience with GiveDirectly has been positive, and I hope their impactful work continues to uplift communities in need.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the second transfer was an incredible blessing for my family. With the money, I wasted no time in investing in our future. I decided to purchase five goats for $150, hoping to kickstart a livestock business. Goats are valuable assets in our community, and I knew they would multiply over time, providing a stable source of income for my family. In addition to the goats, I used $80 to buy clothes for my family. It was heartwarming to see the smiles on their faces as they wore new, clean garments. Since my charcoal business had been our main source of sustenance yet very tiring, I used some of the money to stock up on food supplies. This ensured that my family wouldn't have to worry about hunger during lean times. With the remaining funds, I plan to start a small business that will generate steady income for us in the long run. Thanks to GiveDirectly's support, I now have the means to create a brighter and more secure future for my loved ones.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the transfer message on my phone in the afternoon when I was resting after working on my farm for the better part of the day. I checked the contents, and to my surprise, I had my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt happy because this was a blessing to me. I was used to taking a particular kind of food from my shamba, but to celebrate this fortune, I prepared a special meal that day and rejoiced with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Living in a grass-thatched house for years with no hopes of upgrading to a better house has been the greatest pain that I have suffered over the years. This is after my previous house collapsed, and over the years, I have been living in small temporary structures because I could not afford a decent house. My husband does manual jobs, and what he earns is just enough for food and other household needs. It was not easy to save for a house, though I hoped that one day I would live in a decent iron-roofed house. However, after receiving the first transfer, my hope of building a new house was revived. I was able to buy enough building materials, such as iron sheets and building poles. I am now in the process of constructing a spacious house where I will live peacefully, where I am no longer worried about it collapsing or needing to replace grass.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been able to accomplish some things through the transfer that, to me, seemed impossible due to a lack of finances. I was sheltering in a weak, small, and shanty grass thatched hut. I was not comfortable at all, I had to replace the roof with new grass, and it was not stable enough. I was worried that whenever it rained, it would collapse. When I received the money, my priority was to build a decent and an iron roofed house. I thus spent a bigger portion of my first transfer on buying building poles, iron sheets, nails and paid for the labour involved in the construction. I am happy that soon I will be sheltering in my dream house, after years of waiting. I also spent part of the transfer on paying fees for my children. They were constantly sent home for lack of fees and I am happy that I cleared the arrears and were allowed to continue with their studies. Lastly, I did some shopping on household items such as new utensils as well as buying food tha could last for more than a month.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
New house! For the 8 years I have been married in this compound, I have never gotten the opportunity to fully welcome my relatives at home. This is because my house is too small to host any visitor for a night and I find this having disconnected me from my other family. With this money, I intend to spend my first transfer ($550) to construct a semi-permanent iron-roofed house. This will give me the chance to accept any appointment that I might decline due to the lack of a better house. In addition, it will improve my self-esteem as a respected individual in the village. Part of the remaining amount will help me to venture into livestock keeping to have a dependable project for my future. I plan to start with 10 indigenous goats which will cost me $300. The other pending amount will cater to my very basic needs like food. Hence this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the financial challenge that we currently face in our household, I am so grateful for my husband's efforts to ensure his family appears smart. He recently bought new clothes for both of us and this has boosted my self-esteem since I can confidently visit relatives or walk within the village without worrying about my dress code. On the other hand, my children are always smart when they go to school and this can directly guarantee them the urge to learn. Hence, I consider this as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In my household of 5, we depend on my husband who is a casual laborer in the mining sector where he earns $20 per week. Considering this little income which must be divided into settling school fees for my 2 children, buying food, and other basic needs, we rarely save for the future. In addition, his income is usually inconsistent because it depends on the availability of customers at the quarry. Since I am just a housewife, I lack money to supplement his income and this means in some days, we go hungry, a situation that robs away my joy as a mother. Therefore, the financial crisis is what stands out as my biggest challenge at the moment.
