How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals as of now and I am very grateful for the ones that I was able to accomplish. One is the business that I revived and the sewing machine that I acquired. I believe I will be in a position to save the profits so that I can send all my children to higher institutions. This will be one way of changing their lives together with their generations.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well not only for my household but also for the entire village at large. Everyone was treated equally all through the enrolment process to the end of their stat in my region. Also, the staff did not discriminate against anyone despite their age or even tribe. I did not hear or see anything the organisation did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25000 of my second transfer on boosting the retail shop business that I have been operating in the village. Due to the financial problems that I was experiencing, I was sometimes forced to utilize the capital which lead to the collapse of the business. I am happy that I received the cash timely and managed to revive the business. I am now earning good profits that have enabled me to fend for my family without struggling like before. Also, I spent KES 18000 on buying a dairy cow from a friend. I had to settle for it since it will serve as a long-term investment that will enable me to achieve a lot. Additionally, I saved KES 5000 for my son so that once he transitions to high school I will be able to take cater of all his necessary items for him to be enrolled. I later bought a sewing machine because I am a tailor by profession unfortunately I had not been lucky enough to secure the machine. I now feel motivated and grateful because soon I will open a workshop. With the remaining cash, I bought food for my five family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was some minutes to 7am while I was doing some house cleaning when I hear a message tone from my phone. Upon checking, I did not believe my eyes. It was the promised transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly that had been sent. To me, it was like a miracle and I knelt down and prayed to thank God for connecting me with GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, my business was unstable due to lack of the most demanded items, but as of now, it has almost all the needed items after restocking it. I could not be able to do that if it were not for GiveDirectly. After my child completed his primary school level, I was worried on how I could take him to secondary school. But through the “miracle” from GiveDirectly, I feel relieved because I managed to set aside some money for him.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first thing I did was to add more stock to my business where I sell household items such as utensils, basins, buckets etc. In the stock addition I used KES 25000.00 so as to make the business reliable. Thereafter, I bought a cow for KES 18000.00. The reason for buying the cow is to reduce the expenses of buying milk for my family because I am certain that the cow will be providing milk once it gives birth. In terms of education, I saved KES 10000.00 for my child who will be joining form one in May 2022. Since my business has not picked so well, I saw it prudent to save for him so that I do not strain when the time reaches.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security in this household. I am a mother of 3 children. For the past year, I have been involving myself in a small business, selling household items. This business currently earns me a profit of 3,000 KES. I depend on this income to provide for my family. 3,000 KES is not even enough to buy food that can last us a whole month. I intend to use 40,000 KES to expand my business by increasing the stock. By doing so, I am hopeful I will be making a profit of not less than 6,000 KES in a month. With this amount, I will be able to comfortably provide food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I gave birth to my last born son two months to the due delivery date. This was in late May 2021. This worried me so much. I had this fear that my son could develop some health-related complications. We are now stepping into the seventh month and my son is very healthy. This is more of a miracle to me. Seeing Mathias in a good shape gives me a lot of happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the current challenge I am facing. I am a mother of 3 children. I own a small business where I sell household items mainly cutlery. This business approximately earns me a profit of 3,000 KES per month. This amount is very little to fully sustain us for one month. My husband who works in Lamu as a welder tops up the amount, but because he is not permanently employed, he sometimes fails to support us. This leaves us with only the 3,000 KES to depend on. To avoid going to bed hungry, we sometimes have to skip the lunch meal.
