How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to buy more chickens and a wire mesh for fencing the compound to keep the chicken from going to the farm and feeding on my vegetables. I have a few chickens that I am rearing and they have been of great help to me. I usually sell the eggs and the money from the sales I use in buying essential household items such as sugar, soap, tea leaves, salt, etc. I thus would like to increase the number of chickens that I am rearing so that I can make more income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by helping everyone in the community. They were not biased and thus no one who is a member of the village was left out. They thus changed the lives of so many people for the better. Most of them managed to build new houses, others bought livestock and some paid school fees for their children with it. GiveDirectly staff also taught us well in the meeting that they held with the community members. I hence do not see anything wrong that I would recommend them to change. I urge them to keep up the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I plan to improve the house that I am living in with the recent transfer. I want to replace the mud walls with timber and cement the floor which is also made of mud. I want to do so because I am getting old and I am no longer able to mud the walls and the floor. I have already bought the timber. I am yet to buy the materials, that is, sand, cement, and stones for cementing the floor. I had thought of improving the house before but I didn't have the money to do so. I usually buy and sell onions at the market and I also rear the chickens to earn a living. The money that I make is little and it is only enough to buy food and essential household items. So when GiveDirectly came up with this program in our village, I saw the opportunity to finally achieve my wish. Other than that, I took a little bit of money and I used it in improving my onion-selling business. I am thus glad and grateful to GiveDirectly for their support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8am ,when my son came to inform me that some neighbors has received the transfer. When we checked my phone actually it there was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy, my family felt so happy too. I knew I would renovate my house to look decent. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and enabled us achieve our dream .
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased timber ready to renovate my house. I had always wished to own a decent home but I didn't had the money for buying the materials. I depend on small scale farming and causal jobs. This earns me a small income which I use it on other basic household items. When I received the transfer I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to buy building materials. Currently all the materials are ready only waiting for the second transfer. I will have a spacious and better house. Whenever I had visitors I will not shy off to welcome. Them. Bought some timber yet to start renovating my house. I have peace of mind and hope to have a decent house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 45,000 to renovate my house to look decent. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.I used to live in a small house which could not host all my family members and. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children in various schools. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our lives.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recieving this money means a financial break through to me. I am a single mother of 7 children. I lost my husband 5 years ago and since then we have been struggling as a family to put food on the table. I have a small business of selling onions and out of that I get KES 300 per day as my profit. We end up spending all this on food and other basic needs in the family. I still have a huge school fees balance which I need to clear to enable them pursue their education. I am delighted today that I will be one of the beneficiaries of Givedirectly. I plan to spend KES 60,000 to pay the school fees balance, KES 20,000 to expand my business and the remaining amount to buy food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After staying at home for almost 5 years when I lost my husband, we have been depending fully from the neighbours and relatives for provision of food. It was then five months ago when my brother gave me some money to start a business. Because of the business,I am now self reliant and I can provide for my family which I see as a progress to us. My children are now happy that they can a afford a meal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
One of the challenges I face in my life is lack of money to pay for my children's high school fees. I have 3 children who are in secondary level each requiring KES 20,000 per year. They are always sent back home for fees since raising their fees is an uphill task for me. What I get from my onion selling business,KES 300 per day, that I started recently has never been enough to cater for my household needs which school fees is among them. My hope is to one day see them stop being sent home for school fees. This will give them enough time to concentrate on their studies.
