How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Investment is something I intend to do. Because there aren't many vegetables in our hamlet, I decided to open a grocery shop after conducting some study. In order to accomplish this, my husband, who works occasional jobs, has been saving money, which he decided to give to me as startup cash for the business. In light of the fact that many people travel great distances to buy vegetables, I am confident about forming positive sales.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my perspective, GiveDirectly succeeds admirably by providing financial support. I feel a little bit of pride and pleasure when I consider what I've been able to accomplish as a person. Everything I was able to do has significantly changed my life. To me and everyone else I am aware of, all of them have brought a great deal of satisfaction. There is nothing that GiveDirectly could do better, in my opinion. Everything was carried out well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I decided to purchase some iron sheets to fix my grass-thatched house after receiving the second transfer because it was leaking. 20 pieces cost me $198. I was able to complete the renovation for a $80 labor fee. I just finished the makeover, and now I have a lovely house with no leaks. I chose to spend $80 on a sack of maize because it was a drought season and I wanted to make sure my family had access to food. After that, since I had no bed at all, I spent $100 on a bed and a mattress. I once utilized some empty cartons to help me sleep on the floor. In order to have something that can reproduce and to always remember GiveDirectly for the wonderful deed it performed for me, I also spent $70 on two goats.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I vividly remember that fateful evening as I was taking a siesta on my coach. I had just finished bathing my daughter when I heard phone vibration. Upon checking my phone, it was a confirmation message from GiveDirectly showing that I have received KES 55,000. I was ecstatic and they joy I had had no bound. I knew my day of being great was here. I had been longing to repair our grass-thatched house with some good iron sheets. I alerted my husband about the good news when he was back home from his daily hustle. We sat down as a family and agreed that we would withdraw the whole amount the following day and start spending as we have plan. I am so grateful for the support provided by GiveDirectly since the transfer came at a time when I needed cash the most. Being that I was a housewife and a mother of one, life was uneasy especially to my husband who would go hustle but still come back empty-handed.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have always desired to have a place called home in vain due to lack of enough money to support my family basic needs. I am currently a housewife while my husband work as a casual labourer and what he earn is never enough to support the entire family demand. We currently live in small grass-thatched house and whenever it rains, we normally have to squeeze ourselves through a corner with my husband and our little daughter. I am grateful for the support provided by GiveDirectly in that I was able to buy 15 iron sheet for KES 15,000 and we are in the process of completing the construction using the last transfer so that we shift to the new house. Furthermore, I bought food for the family which has lasted us over two months now. My family have been enjoying decent meal everyday hence improving our health greatly. In addition, I bought one goat worth KES 3,500 which will serve as my future security and investment. My life has changed greatly in that it brought a great peace and happiness in the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of 1 child and I depend on my husband for family financial support. However, my husband is not financially stable as he only does some casual jobs which are usually not a guarantee. When we received the transfer, we felt a sigh of relief and we were happy because we knew our long a waited dream was about to be achieved. I bought 15 iron sheet for KES 15,000. We have been living in a gass-thatched house which was very cold during the night. On many occasions, I was admitted at the hospital due to recurring pneumonia infection. I am grateful for the support provided by GiveDirectly since we have started the house construction. Furthermore, I spent KES 20,000 for agricultural purpose in which I spent part in preparing and tilling the land for planting, buying seeds and fertilizer for the farm. I can gladly say that my farm is currently doing well with high yields. From the farm's produce, we always enjoy different kind of food hence improving our health greatly. In addition, I bought food worth KES 6,000 for the family, including beans and maize flour. Due to the cold season, I bought my family some warm clothes and shoes worth KES 9,000. Last but not least, I also bought one goat worth KES 3,500 to help increase my investment once the goat will start producing and I was able to save the rest of the transfer. I am planning to spend my next transfer in completing the house construction process which we have started.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means diversification of my households sources of income. Relying on my husbands casual jobs in town has proven futile because he only earns KES 500 a day and with the rise in the cost of living, this is no longer sustainable. I am planning to use KES 30,000 from the transfers to start a grocery businesss in the village. I will later use KES 20,000 to enrol for a hairdressing course in the nearest vocational institution.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Putting a meal on the table has been a nightmare. Whenever I get a meal, I feel happy and thank God for the gift.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The leaking roof of my grass-thatched house has made it impossible to sleep inside with my baby. Moreover, I sleep on the floor and with the outbreak of ants in the village, this makes my nights miserable and at times I am forced to sleep in my grandmother's house.
