How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment I dont have any new plans due to school fees needs and other responsibilities but all in all I am grateful for the support that has empowered us financially.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am happy and fulfilled with what I have accomplished so far. I don't have new goals at the moment because of the school fees responsibilities which I am still struggling with.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I run an eatery at a nearby shopping centre, I am a mother of five children. Owning a dairy cow was among the dreams that I had but unfortunately, I was unable to realise this goal due to financial constraints . Therefore, Upon the receival of my second transfer, I saw it fit to purchase a dairy cow, worth KES 30,000 so that I would be able to remember the good deeds that the organization did for us in future. Additionally, I paid school fees arrears for my children. Knowing that my children can comfortably study without any hiccups gives me peace of mind. I am so grateful for the support that has financially uplifted my living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7.20 am while cooking breakfast for my kids who were preparing to go to school at the time. That's when I heard a message alert on my phone, and on checking, I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I and my kids were very happy, sang for joy and thanked both God and GiveDirectly for such a gift.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfers is the clearance of this term's school fees for my kids. As a result, my kids now concentrate on their studies and I expect good results.
Secondly, I have bought materials for upgrading my house from a mud floor to a cemented one. However, much I desired to upgrade earlier I couldn't but GiveDirectly has made it possible.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of five and a tea and chapati vendor for the past four years. From my business, I normally get KES 2,000 on a good day which helps with household expenses. My husband also works as a security guard and from his income he pays school fees.
Since I have two sons in high school I spent KES 30,000 on the payment of school fees when the transfers arrived.
Secondly, I spent KES 20,000 on the purchase of construction materials. This is for cementing the mud floor of my three-roomed timber-framed house built over three years.
Lastly, I also spent KES 5,000 on food and household items. As a result, household expenses have been reduced.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We are a family of 7 depending on my husband's watchman job for support. He earns KES 12000 a month which all caters for the school fees of my children in grade 11 and grade 8. Furthermore, we strain up resources predominantly to see our children succeed in their education. Not to say, we at times forgo meals for lack of finances since all have to cater for education. I am delighted that with the Givedirectly's transfers, the school fees burden will be eased for I intend to use KES 50000 to clear arrears for my son in grade 11 as well as my daughter who will be joining grade 9 in May 2022. I will be grateful that my children will have uninterrupted school sessions hence have a brighter future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Although my family of 7 live from hand to mouth, I am glad that we have never lacked completely what to eat. On the other side, my children have had uninterrupted sessions of schooling which is the dream of each parent. I thank God for a supportive husband, who despite struggling financially, has guaranteed that the family is in a comfort zone.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The crops on my farm have been immensely affected by the harsh climatic condition in my area. Beforehand, the maize production on my farm was tenfold the current harvest as I recently harvested 3 bags of maize, unlike the previous 5 bags. I am worried that it might not last the household the entire month of April 2022 given that all 5 children are at home for the holiday and we might end up purchasing more with the limited finances.
