How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I bought a dairy cow with part of my first transfer and I am looking forward to buy another one by next year. Accomplishing this means that I will no longer be buying milk every single day and I will be able to save on that. I will also be able to sell milk and earn some income and therefore support my husband with paying school fees for our children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
If it was not for the transfers, I would not have managed to build the rental shop or bought the cow. This shows that, through unconditional cash transfers, people are able to invest in ways that works for them and therefore, what GiveDirectly does well is giving their recipients opportunity to choose how to spend their transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A couple of years ago, my husband and I bought a piece of land in the nearby market and we were able to build a shop on half of it. We have not been able to build the other half because our children joined tertiary institutions and all our income has always been channeled towards paying school fees. When I got my first transfer, I was able to build the foundation and build the structure and I was able to do the roofing and other finishing with my second transfer. I ma looking forward to start renting it out at $3 per moth and this money will be enough to cater for my basic needs. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had left my phone off while charging at the charging point the previous night. On that particular morning at around 10 am is when I switched on my phone while preparing to go to the farm. That's when I saw I received an MPesa notification, on checking I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and went to my Sukuma wiki farm joyfully.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The availability of enough capital to expand my beans business is the biggest difference since I started receiving the transfers. This is because this has been my family's main income source. I had desired to expand it for the past five years but I couldn't afford it. As we speak I have increased my beans stock from the usual KES 30,000 to KES 50,000 stock hence more profits.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have worked as a beans vendor for the past 21 years. This has been a source of income and school fees for my family. So when I received my first transfer, I spent KES 30,000 on a bag and half of beans as an additional stock to my beans business. Earlier on, I had a bean stock of KES 30,000 stock but with the arrival of GiveDirectly transfers, I have a bean stock of KES 50,000. My daily profits used to be KES 1500 on a good day but now I have double profits. Furthermore, I spent KES 6,000 on plowing two acres of land in preparation to plant maize. This will be a source of school fees for my son in college. Additionally, I spent KES 5,000 on food and household items. This has helped reduced household expenses. This is because I normally look up to my beans business for food and household expenses. Lastly, I am also planning to buy a KES 2,800 barbed wire. This will help in securing my compound.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean that I will be able to fence my farm to get rid of animals straying on my farm. I practice agricultural farming where I plant maize, beans, and vegetables on rotation and rely on the money that I earn to support my family. The animals cause so much damage on my farm and this creates trouble with my neighbors hence fencing off my farm will avoid these troubles and I will be able to reap a good harvest.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I harvested four sacks of maize in December that I sold and I earned some money. This brought me happiness because I used the money that I earned to expand my small business of selling beans.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The major challenge that our area faces is drought and this affects farming. I rely on rain for irrigation since rivers are far and when the rail fails or when I do not time well the planting season, I will end up not doing any farming and this will affect my income.
