How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Paying school fees balances for my granddaughter is the new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer. She had cleared her secondary school studies but had not been issued with the certificate due to pending balances. She was so happy and grateful, currently, she is yet to join college this year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving money to the poor in the community to build a better house, purchase dairy cows and pay school fees for their children in various schools. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10,000 on paying school fees arrears for my granddaughter who cleared her secondary school studies last year. She is yet to join college this year. She is so happy because she was able to get the certificate. I spent KES 20,000 on purchasing a heifer. This is an investment because I will get milk when it reproduces in the future. This will be an additional source of ink e for my family. For the rest of the money, I Cemented the floor of my house and renovated the walls. We lived in a mud floor house and we were being exposed to dusty particles. Currently, I live in a Cemented house free from any dust. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly came at the right time to support us. We live a better life now with my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was 2pm when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I had waited for it since my neighbors had started receiving theirs morning hours. I was worried why I didn't receive mine, I decided to remain calm and collected. When I checked the message I felt so happy and the worries ended. I have never received such amount of money before. I went and withdrew the money the same day and bought a water tank.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have started building a better house for my family. We used to live in a small mud house which could not host all the family comfortably. This was even more demoralizing whenever we had visitors, there was no space to host them comfortably. We were not able to maintain the house. We were required to smear the floor to be dust free. We are in a position where we cannot do this more often because of our old age. Currently we have build a better house and we are planning to cement the floor. When the construction is done we will have a spacious rooms to host visitors conformably. We will not shy off to welcome visitors. Whenever we have relatives around they will have a room to spent a night. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money to purchase building materials and started building a better and spacious house for my family. We decided to build a timber house and cement the floor to be dust free. We live in a small mud house which cannot host all the family comfortably. We were also being exposed to dust particles. I paid a surveyor who was helped us measure Hhe boundaries of our farms at home. I bought a small watet tank for storing water for domestic use. The rest of the money I bought food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money I will use $200 to renovate and cement my house. I am old and I cannot do casual jobs anymore to earn a living. I am planning to rear chicken and cows which will help me earn a living during my old age with the sell of eggs, milk and at times chicken. Therefore I will set $200 for poultry and $350 to buy a dairy cow. I will then buy food with $100 and save the remaining $150
What is the happiest part of your day?
From 2pm EAT is always my happiest part of the day, during this time I am done taking care of my cattles and I will take rest with my grandchildren. I would also do tailoring as my hobby during this time.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food shortage and hunger has been a big challenge for me, due to our old age we are no longer unable to do casual jobs to earn a living, also our subsistence farming does not give us enough to feed the family.
