How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the coming of GiveDiretly, my life has been so miserable. This was brought about by the condition of my house, it was in a poor condition and also collapsing. I had to seek shelter from my relatives and especially during the rainy seasons. Also, some of my properties would get damaged and this made to be unhappy always. Currently, everything has transformed because I managed to renovate it and it's in good condition now. And this brings the difference in my life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in our village in numerous ways. Everyone in my village has transformed in different ways considering the fact that every needy household was chosen and we all received our transfers as promised.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some building poles, iron sheets, timber, and nails. This was purposely for the renovation of my house which was almost falling due to its bad condition. The roofing was old and it was so leaky especially during rainy seasons. I also bought a new mattress and some clothes for my children. The remaining amount of bought enough foodstuffs for my family

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having gone to the hospital and being treated has made my life to be very different. Initially, It reached a point I had lost hope of living. I was very sick and I had no one to take care of me. All my children were jobless and my spouse passed on a long time ago. Hunger and sickness was a major issue in my life. The whole of my family was ever sad especially my children because of my condition. The moment GiveDirectly came into my village, I knew God had answered my prayers. Immediately I received my transfer, I went to the hospital. I must say I am recovering and I feel much better. I feel happy because I can now go back to where I used to do my casual jobs. Were it not GiveDirectly to come to my life I don't think I would still be alive. I am so thankful for this organization.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 am when my helper came into my room and informed me about the good news that GiveDirectly had sent my first transfer into my account. I felt so happy because I knew there are hopes of living a healthier and better life. I had been sick for years and now I had hopes of finally going to the hospital and getting proper medication.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a pair of oxen. I have been having the desire to own them for a long period of time but could not afford it. Since I am old I do believe they will be of great help. Previously I used to hire labor which was a bit expensive. Sometimes I could not plant anything due to lack of money to pay for labor. I am glad this will no longer be the case anymore. I will be using them to till my land and hire it to my neighbors. I also bought some clothing and paid part of the school fees for my grandchildren. In addition to that, I managed to also clear my medical bills. I have been sick for a long period of time and the medical bill was mind blogging. I later went to the hospital and had some proper checking to ensure I had fully recovered. I used the remaining amount to buy building poles which will help me to renovate my house. Since this organization came to my life, food has never been a problem, generally, life has become better and simpler as a result of their help.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Seeking attentive medical care for my health condition is what receiving this money means to me. It has been one year now since I was diagnosed with ulcers but due to financial constraints, I have never received any serious care. The arrival of GiveDirectly has awakened my hope in life since I intend to seek treatment from a referral hospital. In addition to my desired goals, I also need to construct a decent house for myself because the one I currently live in is very small and at the same time is used as a kitchen, something which is not favourable to my health. The remaining amount will support me to meet other basic needs especially; school for my grandchild and clothing. This will change my livelihood for the better, a transformation that I have longed for.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Considering my health status, I usually spend my day indoors. Since I suffer from ulcers, I always feel depressed whenever my family members are away. In the evening when they are around, they give me company that brings back my lost joy. Therefore, I consider evening being the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of serious medical care due to financial challenges has been my biggest hardship. This is because, I am a widow who is a dependant to my sons who are doing casual jobs at Mombasa. Their incomes has been limited due to the more responsibilities they have for their families, something that has made me not to seek serious medical care ever since I was diagnosed with my health problem. This has affected me psychologically, making my health deteriorating day by day.
