How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
So far all is well and I do not have any new goals apart from the ones we have discussed earlier with my spouse. The main one was to renovate our house which had an old leaky roof and I am grateful that this was accomplished. During the rainy seasons, it was hectic because we were forced to seek shelter from our neighbors till the rains stopped.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by transforming our lives positively. Initially, none of us owned livestock, a better house, or even operating businesses. This was a result of the poverty life that had stricken the entire household. I am happy that through the financial support, all has changed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying five goats at KES 17500. These have been well thoughtful assets but I couldn't afford to keep them because of my financial status. Also, I opted to keep them because they take little time to mature as compared to the other domestic animals. In addition to that, I bought a new mattress at KES 2500 to replace the old one which had worn out. Nowadays, I no longer complain of back pains like before. Later on, I cleared the fees arrears of KES 3500 for my five children who are in primary schools. With the remaining cash, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was at the nearby trading center when my phone started ringing so loudly. I was decided to ignore it because I was in a hurry since it was our market day. However, after about five minutes I heard another message tone. I was relatively curious and decided to check what it might be. Upon checking, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had finally received my first KES 55000 that I was promised earlier. I was so excited and I remember having to go back home and extend the celebrations with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now hopeful and happier because I own goats. It has always been my dream to keep them for quite a long time but because of the poverty life that had stricken my household, I couldn't afford it. I however settled for goats because they always reproduce and mature faster compared to other domestic animals. This shows that I will have many of them within a short period. I plan to sell the offspring once they mature and save the money for my children's academic journey. Once they will be transitioning to secondary schools or even colleges I will be well prepared. Also, I will use part of the money on catering for my household expenses like foodstuffs among others. I have been jobless ad only depend on my spouse who is a casual laborer earning a very low income. With the seven children, it hasn't been easy raising them but I am grateful because I feel there is light at the end of the tunnel.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my forst transfer in buyng twenty pieces of iron sheets at KES 16000, timber, nails, and a labor charge of KES 4000. This was for the renovation of my house becasue it had an old leaky roof which was so hectic every rainy season and all we could do was just seek shelter from friends, Also I bought five goats KES 15000 which are now valuable assets that I am keeping in my compound. To add to that, I bought a new mattress at KES 3000 to replace the old one that had worn out and I couldnt always complain of back pains every day. Also, I cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my five children who are in primary schools. I am using the remaining amount in buying foodstuffs for my family and other household items like new clothes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means continued education for my family. I am a housewife and my husband relies on the charcoal burning business which earns him very little KES 1200 per week. I am planning to spend KES 20,000 to clear the fee balance for my children. I will also use KES15000 to repair the roof of my house which is leaking.
The remaining amount will use it to buy ten indigenous goats which do well in our area and cater to other basic needs such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I get enough time to rest with my family.Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours when I am busy doing casual jobs.Sometimes I even miss food for my household.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced is lack of money.I am a house wife and the little earnings my husband gets is not enough for all our basic needs.Due to this I have been struggling to pay school fees and sometimes my children miss exams because they are sent. This pains me a lot.
