How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to start a cafeteria business once I get some money. This idea came after thorough observation and realized that in our area there are no cafeterias and people have to go a distance for the same. This is a business opportunity that I am planning to venture into once I get some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well to provide the funds unconditionally to households. This money has a greater impact because people are using it to better their living conditions depending on the areas they feel they need an uplift. For the future, GiveDirectly should not relent in giving financial advice to villagers and follow up with them to have a great impact on the living standards and lifestyle in the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Initially, I was employed to ride a neighbor's motorbike for a commission. The commission I was getting was nowhere near catering to my family's basic needs. When I got to the second phase of the transfer, I opted to buy my motorbike on hire-purchase. I first paid a deposit of KES 30000.00 and I am paying a daily installment of KES 150.00 daily for two years. I also added some stock-worthy KES 10000.00 at my shop where I sell food items and some personal effects. For the remaining KES 10000.00, I bought a nice phone so that some of the clients I carry using the motorbike could contact me easily. This is because the phone I had was not serving me well.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The Givedirecty transfer came on a good time that I really needed a miracle.I remember that day very well,it was around 6:00pm,I had my phone with me,I had gone to the market to fetch vegetables on a debt since things were really hard for my family and i. I couldn't believe my eyes I had to confirm twice and I was ammused. The transfer came the right time when I really needed it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have managed to open up a business for my wife and now she's busy earning an income, when we combine with what I get from the motorcycle business I can now sustain my family needs comfortably.I will forever be grateful for what Givedirecty has done for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES20000 to start up a kiosk business for my wife,I was working as a motorbike transporter and my earnings were very low because In a day in would make KES500 in which KES300 was for my employer the balance of KES200 was for my daily expenses which was barely enough to take care of my family. I had spoken to my employer to sell to me the motorcycle and he agreed that I pay him KES40000 since it is second hand. I made a down payment of KES30000 and the balance to pay him after one month. The remaining KES4700,I bought to bundles of maize floor and blessed my grandmother since she didn't manage to get the Give directly transfer.Iam truly greatful to Givedirectly for changing my family's life.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have never been comfortable living in a natural house with an earthen floor. I am sometimes attacked by jiggers, a painful experience I would never want to get into. walking feels like a thorn in the eye, let alone that, conducting my daily duties becomes impossible. Renovating my house is the only way out of this trouble. A cemented floor and plastered walls, including a ceiling are the options possible done with approximately 15,000 KES.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I got married six months ago , I am happy that I have someone to live with for the rest of my life. I was lonely, so being together with her gives me joy and a sense of belonging.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have longed to be a plant operator. There is a college offering such courses which I am currently enrolled but I am always out for fees. I have not been able to continue since I don't have money. It is something which I love doing and it discourages me now that, I am not sure If I will be able to complete.
