How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My additional goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer is to sponsor my husband driving course. This will help him in upgrading his dividing skills. He first did a driving course on a small motor vehicles although he desires to upgrade to driving heavy motor vehicles. The new driving course will help him to be able to get better opportunities which will give us an additional source of income. Initially, my goal was to build a pit latrine. The one I had at first was a temporary, old and upresentable latrine. I am glad that now I have a permanent pit latrine.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in notifying the community where it works about its program. The GD staffs also do well in dimistifying the wrong perception of some community members that GiveDirectly's cash transfer is attached to bad omen. The financial support has helped me to overcome myriads of challenges that I previously had. Although GiveDirectly does well in sending money through Mpesa, however, the elderly who have low Mpesa comprehension are always taken advantaged of by their helpers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on meeting the medication cost for my son who is 13 years old. He had an eye problem that was affecting his studies. When I received my second transfer, I took him to optician. His medication costed me about KES 18,000. I am a proud mother that currently he is doing well in hid studies. In addition, I used KES 16,000 to buy two cows which are equally doing pretty well. Lastly I spent KES 15,000 to complete building my pit latrine. Currently, I am not ashamed to host guests in my home unlike before when I could point my latrine to any visitor.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Being a lower primary school teacher by profession, I was at work by the time I received the transfer message. It was at around 10 am during the 1st short break when I saw the message. I felt so happy knowing that I was going to settle some pending projects that I had started. In that regard my remaining teaching sessions to lunch time were very enjoyable since being the teacher I was very happy, something that boosted the morale of the students and they didn’t slumber as they used to sometimes towards lunch hours. These projects were going to take quite a longer time to completion if it were not for the GiveDirectly assistance.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As at now, I live comfortable at a plot where I have all documents. Initially I was a bit worried thinking that once the owner gets a highest bidder would sell the plot and return me my money so I was living in fear. Again I managed to construct a modern washroom which is a guarantee to good health. Issues of cholera outbreak are no longer bothering me as before. These two projects would have taken me quite a longer time if it were not for GiveDirectly. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for hastening my desires.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had initially bought a piece of land and constructed my house where I live with my family. The things that were pending and I was fighting to achieve was to construct a modern washroom since the one I was using was not good health wise and I feared some outbreak of diseases. I also hadn’t completed paying for the plot. Upon receiving the money, I used KES 25,000.00 to clear the debt for the one who sold the land for me so that to get all my land purchasing documents signed. I also spend around KES 28,000.00 in constructing the modern washroom and a toilet.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a boost to my income. I plan to invest in the education of my husband. He is a driver who drives public service vehicles. This gives us little pay as a family. My plan is therefore to get my husband back to driving school to train as a plant operator. A plant operator earns more than a public service driver because it creates an avenue for more opportunities.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am back from work. Coming back home and seeing my family well after a busy day is very fulfilling for me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Little income compared to my needs is what has been my biggest hardship. I am teacher and my spouse is a driver. We have been supporting other relatives especially in their education. Currently I have a sister in law that I pay school fees for. I have three children of my own who are also in school.
