How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My vision is to be a livestock farmer. If I get some money, my aim is to buy cows so that I can have different types of animals such that, if a client needs one I would be comfortable selling whether a cow or a goat depending on their needs. Although cows have a slow growth rate compared to goats but when they mature they have good selling price compared to goats.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
This organization did well to me. Initially I had no means of retaining my son at school and he was ever being sent home because of school fees but since the day I started receiving the transfers, his school fees is well catered for and he is doing well in hi learning. I also managed to get a mattress. This was a long time wish and finally it came to pass because of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I first paid KES 10000.00 school fees for my secondary school child. This is to enable him to have a smooth flow of learning not as before when he used to be sent home for fees. Thereafter, I bought a standard bed and a mattress for KES 10200 because I was initially using a traditional bed and a mat which were worn out. Since I had the desire to become a livestock farmer I bought seven goats for KES 24500.00. Looking at how hostile the climate was I decided to keep the remaining amount for the family upkeep.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy and grateful the moment I received the money because I had suffered for long and this was a very big relief to me. I was able to get the things that I knew are going to help me both immediately and in the future, like the food and the goats I bought with the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference I can see in my life is the way that i no longer suffer like before and I have the things that before, I could only wish to have. I have goats, food and my son is in school which is a very big step forward in my life and even for the future, I am hopeful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought seven goats for a total of KES30100 because I did not have them and they are a particular investment that I have always wanted to have. This makes me so proud and grateful. I spent KES5000 for my son's school fees because I do not want him to be sent home because of school fees arrears which is good because when he gets a good education, I will be able to depend on him in the future. I bought three sacks of maize at a cost of KES9200 because that was not only going to be food for my family and I alone but also for my chickens too.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this means food security in my family. This is because I do farming on a half-acre of land the much I harvest is 50kgs maize that sustains my family of 7 for 2 weeks only. I am planning to spend KES 40000 to buy oxen and ox plough which will enable me to upscale my farming to 10acres of land to produce more harvest utmost 15 bags of maize to sustain us for 18 months. The remaining amount of my first transfer will cater to household expenses like food. My second transfer will help me pay school fees for my children in secondary school. This will allow them to settle in school and hence improve their performance in school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because at this time I share dinner with my children, something that makes me feel happy. Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours when I might even miss food for my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. This is because I am a housewife and my husband is doing causal labor of charcoal vending, which earns him very little. Due to this, I have struggled to put food on the table and sometimes seeking help from my relatives something that does not give me a piece of mind.
