How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal to purchase a piece of land in addition to the small piece I inherited from my parents. I have been practicing small-scale farming on the inherited piece that has since provided a minimal outcome that can not sustain the feeding of my family. I am looking forward to leveraging the few resources I have so that I can auction and purchase the piece of land.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did a great job providing financial support that transformed most families in our village. Most households that received the money invested in assets - among them pieces of land and livestock - and paid their children's school fees. Previously, we were living in poverty, and the changes we experienced improved our living standards. The process was great, and we are grateful to the officers who visited and talked to us both at a group meeting and in our households.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer, I spent KES 10000 on my new house after purchasing eight pieces of ceiling boards and meeting the labor charges involved. I also spent KES 24000 on a heifer to add to the first one I bought after receiving the first transfer. Investment in livestock will come in handy in future projects since I can either sell their products and save the outcome or their offspring. In addition, I obtained a new piece of furniture at KES 10000 for my new house and spent the remaining amount on new pairs of clothes and foodstuff that I am still using in my household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The first thing I usually do in the morning after waking up is to check my phone to know whether I have any missed calls or new messages. This case was not different on the 15th of March but what made it more outstanding is the Mpesa message that I had. I was so delighted to know that GiveDirectly had fulfilled its promise. I whispered a word of prayer to thank God for the blessings that had just come in and for leading GiveDirectly to our village.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I did Human Resource Management in college but I had not been given the certificate due to fee arrears that I was still owing the school. I am glad that I now have it and can apply for any job position even if it is an internship. In addition, I now have an iron-roofed house and I can fetch water for domestic use during the rainy season. I would not have achieved all this if GiveDirectly had not decided to give us an unconditional cash transfer and I will forever remain grateful for the impact that they have made in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to live in a small grass-thatched house and it had always been my prayer to build a more spacious house before getting married. I am happy that with the transfer, I spent KES 28000 to buy all the necessary materials and paid the full cost of labor for the construction of a two-room house. Also, I spent KES 13600 to clear my college fee arrears so that I would be given my certificate. Using the remaining amount, I bought a bed and mattress to replace the old ones that I was using, clothes and food to last me for some time. I depend on any available casual work whether working on people's farms or at the construction sites and I am glad that I can start looking for a white color job using my certificate.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means furthering my education to the college level. I completed my certificate in Human resource management in the year 2018 but due to school fees arrears, I have not collected my Certificate. I will use KES 22,000 to clear the outstanding fees arrears as having this college certificate will help me secure a job at the same time enroll for a diploma course. I am happy because my life will change for the better.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I come from a polygamous family and my mother died 20 years ago leaving me under the care of my father. Currently, raising my school fees is a challenge since my father cannot afford to look after the two families like before.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being able to meet my basic needs is what has brought me joy. I had planted sweet potatoes in my one point of land and the yield has been amazing. I am currently selling the surplus to save for my school fees.
