How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I now live in a comfortable house that is warm enough for my family compared to the previous one that was leaking in almost every corner. The current house is also spacious enough to accommodate my visitors
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving out non-refundable cash that unconditional is quite good. This has really afforded single parents like us to easily raise school fees for our children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my second transfer on renovating my house. During rainy seasons it was flooding a lot. At times it forced us to seek refuge in my neighbour's home. Recently when schools resumed after a long break occasioned by the outbreak of corona virus, this transfer helped me to pay school fees for my five children who are in high school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very delighted when I received this cash. That happiness is one I have never experienced my whole life to this old age.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have been able to renovate my house at a moment I did not know I would be able to. I did not know at my age I would be able to buy a cow to myself since I have been dependent on my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I renovated my house because it was in ruins and the floor was in bad shape. I have therefore been able to make the floor look more presentable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am blessed with fifteen children of which five of them are still schooling. Four of them are in secondary education while the other one is in tertiary level.Receiving this money means that I will be able to pay 500USD for their school fees for the upcoming academic year. I will then use the remainder of my transfer to renovate my house and buy household items.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spent most of my time cultivating maize, beans and sweet potatoes in my farm. My happiest part of the day normally falls in the evening when I harvest some sweet potatoes for my family to take for supper.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising fifteen kids is never an easy task. I tried my level best to offer them basic education but with no regular source of income, I could not manage to further them with their education. The last five are the lucky ones since they are continuing with their studies as we speak. I hope and pray that I will have the means to see them through their education journey. Being unable to educate all of them remains to be the biggest hardship I have ever experienced.
