How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which is to open a cosmetic shop which will also serve as a salon. I trust that this will be the best business for me to operate and earn a good income considering that I have experience and there are no salon shops in my village. Therefore I feel the service is in full demand. Also, I believe that if I will be able to achieve this, I will be supporting my spouse who has been fending for the whole family for years now. As our family grows, it has been quite tough for him to cater to all our needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in everything that they did in our lives. The officers were very honest and very approachable, we couldn't interact with them as well as ask questions without any fear. Also, the enrolment process was voluntary, free and fair. To add to that, before offering the cash, they took us through several teachings about how safe we could keep our cash to avoid theft since the majority of us were not conversant with the Mpesa usage. This portrayed how much the organisation cared for its beneficiaries. I, therefore, do not see anything that GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on settling a debt of $ 300 to a friend after purchasing his motorbike on credit. I now have peace of mind since I have full ownership of the motorbike. I specifically bought it for my spouse who has the experience he has also been employed by a friend and paid on commission which was so little. Being the family breadwinner it was so difficult for him to make ends meet. We are now thankful that whatever we earn is all ours. In addition, I bought bags of cement and sand which was for improving my own house by cementing the floor and plastering the walls. It was so annoying especially when it rains and sometimes we are forced to seek shelter from our neighbours. I am now happy that it is in good condition for human habitation. To add to that, I went ahead and bought three goats for $90. These will serve as assets that I can rely on in case of any financial constraints that might arise at any time. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying food for my four family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was taking dinner with my family when I realised that there was a new message on my mobile phone. Without wasting time, I decided to check the contents only to realise I had received my first cash transfer from GiveDirectly. It was s moment for my family and I we even assembled and said a special prayer for this blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have full ownership of a motorbike. I had initially purchased it on credit and the owner couldn't allow me to have it till my debt. Therefore my spouse has been hiring those of his friends and paying a commission monthly which was not profitable at all. As a result, we could always lack basic needs like meals, and decent clothing among others. I am so glad that since we owned it, a lot has changed because the profits we get are all ours which is enough to cater for all our needs and save for emergencies. We are even planning to start another business from the savings we have because I am now jobless and I trust this will be a mega transformation in our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20000 of my first cash transfers on settling a debt to a friend, after purchasing a motorbike on credit. I am now happier and grateful because at least I have a reliable source of income. Additionally, I bought two goats at KES 5000 which I am currently keeping on my homestead. Later on, I bought iron sheets and bags of cement which were purposely for the renovation of my house since it had old good and weak walls. With the remaining amount, I have been buying foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will be a great help to me because I am in a financial crisis. I am a housewife and I depend on my spouse who is a motorcycle taxi. We bought this motorcycle on credit in December. I will use KES 50,000 to clear the loan. I have also desired to invest in goat farming because goats survive best in dry seasons. I intend to start with 10 goats for KES 30000. The remaining amount will cater to other household expenses like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of December, my spouse bought a motorcycle on credit. This brought joy to my life. This is because we now have a reliable source of income for the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a housewife and I majorly depending on my spouse who is a motorcycle taxi. His income are as little as KES 200 -350 per day which is not enough to cater for our household needs. My biggest challenge currently is providing food and paying school fees for my children. We sometimes skip meal or even borrow from relative something that stresses me a lot.
