How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I am still working on the construction of a kitchen that I funded with part of the transfer. Alongside this current project, I have a new goal to buy a piece of land through the savings I have been making from my salary and the other casual labor I have been doing. Even though the current cost of living has been high, I believe splitting my income to buy food and saving the rest will help in realizing my new goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The work done by GiveDirectly is great and it transformed the village a lot after diversified spending that was chosen by every household. Giving us money solved the imminent individual problems and the decision to direct the money to everyone's account made it easier for everyone to plan and account for the entire amount later. There are no complaints in the village since everyone interacted with the officers who came to the village and made personal decisions to be part of the project after understanding the details. I had never gotten any support before, but GiveDirectly did an amazing job that everyone is thankful for.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the first transfer, I am glad that I spend adequately on all I had planned and left with some money that spilled over to the projects I had for the second transfer. On receiving the transfer, I already had a barbed wire that I used in fencing around my compound. I spent KES 20000 on buying poles and nails and paid for the labor force I had hired. I also applied a new painting worth KES 2800 on the inner walls of my new house as I prepare to construct a new kitchen. At the moment, I am using a small kitchen with rusted iron sheets, allowing leaks into the cooking place. So far I have bought eight iron sheets at KES 4400, and also two new tables at KES 2400. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on buying school uniforms for my five children, and extra pairs of new clothes for my family of seven.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 5:45 pm and I was at my kitchen garden picking vegetables for supper when suddenly, I heard a message ringtone on my phone. I stopped to check it and to my surprise, I found out that it was an SMS saying that we had received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy on seeing this that I jumped up with joy. Soon enough, I also heard my neighbor celebrating. I thanked God for this and I looked forward to my husband getting home so that I could share with him the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer brought into our lives is that we got the things we didn't have. We now have a cow that is about to calve and a new house which we are about to finish constructing. The children are also happy because they have new clothes and food for their consumption.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 35000 of the recent transfer on buying a cow. We decided to buy it because we usually incur the cost of buying milk daily and it is expensive. We usually buy a liter which is being sold at KES 50. We also spent another KES 15000 on building another house. We decided to construct a small one in the meanwhile because the house that we have been living in it, the roof is leaking. We plan to expand and build a bigger one with the next transfer. It has always been our wish to do the above but due to lack of enough money, we have thus not been in a position to. I usually do casual jobs to earn a living while my husband is a primary school teacher. The money that he gets paid most of it usually goes to the school fees payment of our three children who are in secondary school and buying food. With the remaining amount of the transfer money, we used it in buying food, clothes for the children, and some utensils. Thank you so much GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been on casual terms in a nearby primary school earn KES 4000 a month. I thank God for this job since it enabled me to support my family in our needs. I am lucky I have built a semi-permanent house for us with the help of my husband. I had planned to complete it before this year but in the month of I bought a piece of land from a neighbor. This forced me to divert my resource to it. I was so happy to acquire this asset though it brought my house to a stand. Receiving this money to me means a decent home for my family. I am planning to use KES 20000 to complete. This is an assurance of a beautiful home and enough space to house my children. Completion of this house assures me good minds a chance to invest my income in other activities mainly farming.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband is a teacher meaning he is always fully engaged. I spent much of the last year alone since I was still on maternity leave and my children are also in school. In the last six months, the Christmas holiday was the day I treasured the most. I felt so happy spending time with my family enjoying the delicious meal we had. This broke the loneliness I had at home.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a mother of five with my youngest being ten months old. I was forced to stop my casual job after delivering my child which led to the cut-off of my income. To me currently access to healthy and nutritious food for my family is the main challenge. I own one cow producing a liter of milk a day. This is not enough for my big family. It is expensive to buy daily thus we hardly have enough for consumption.
