How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that, my wife and I are self-employed. Not only did I buy a motorcycle using the transfer that earns me more income but we also put up a shop that my wife operates. Constructing a decent house that we did not have is another success that we are grateful for.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to save money so that I can buy another motorcycle that I will assign to another youth for the purpose of not only generating income for him/her but also more income for me. By so doing, I shall have created employment hence giving back to the community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I topped up KES 20000 to the recent transfer and settled on purchase a motorcycle that I use as a source of income through ferrying people from one point to the other. This is much better than depending on casual jobs which sometimes are had to come by. The fact that I am self-employed makes me happy. This is the best gift that I got from GiveDirectly.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that my sister is now in a boarding secondary school. I had decided to take her to a day school since the money I got from casual jobs was not enough to pay all the school fees. She would have also walked daily for a long distance to get to the school and this could have affected her performance. She is now performing well in the boarding school and that is my happiness. I was also able to fulfill my dream of joining a college to further my studies something which has always been in my mind since I used my transfers to enroll in one of the colleges. I also have my own house in my rural home and I no longer sleep with my neighbors.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My goal that I did not have before receiving my transfers is to start a motorcycle business. I will save part of the money I get from casual jobs and also apply for a loan from the bank and use it to buy the motorcycle. This business will be an additional source of income to pay my school fees. I will also help my mother to pay school fees for my sister.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfer to pay school fees for my sister who was joining secondary school. I received my transfer at a time when she had received admission letters from three boarding secondary schools. I was not able to raise all the school fees and I had decided to take her to a day school since the money I get from casual jobs was little. I am now happy since I used part of my transfers to take her to one of the boarding schools. I also used part of transfer to enroll for a diploma course in one of the colleges. I have always thought of joining college but I have never succeeded since I did have money to further my studies. I also used the remaining part of my transfer to build a new house in my rural home. I did not have a house at home and when I go home I sleep with my neighbors and I was not happy with it. I am now happy since I have my own house and I no longer sleep with my neighbor.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I will use the next transfer to purchase the remaining materials and construct my house back in the village so that I can fully relocate there. I wish to use my last transfer to open a cyber in my home town hence the need to have a decent house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
At my age, it was very embarrassing that I did not have a house back at home which forced me to stay away. I have been undergoing a lot of stress thinking of how to raise the money to purchase the building materials as my parents have also been putting too much pressure on me. When I received the money, all the stress was taken away because I was able to start off the project and I know I will complete it soon and focus on other projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My biggest problem in life has been lack of a house back in the village which I decided to solve using the money I received.I spent the money on building materials such as iron sheets and windows which I will use to construct a house as soon as I receive my next transfer which will help in the purchase of the remaining materials.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was alerted by one of my group members who called me in the morning to ask if I had received the money. I had not checked my phone that morning, therefore, did not have any idea if I had received it. After reading the message and confirming that I had received the money,I decided to cancel all my plans and go to town to book a vehicle to travel upcountry that evening before I could waste the money on unimporttant stuff.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
First, I prioritize like that because I have seen my friends doing that business of hiring tents and chairs and it has a good profit that I believe will help me have stable income. It's only one person that has that type of business and that's why I believe I will succeed. Secondly, I will use some of it to go to school and finish my college degree since education is important and I can also get a job. Lastly, I will use the rest to pay house rent since it has been a challenge for me without a stable employment.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is insecurities associated with gang violence and crime because living in slams that is the order of the day and one never knows where and when they will be victims and this worries me the most. Secondly, fires that occurs within the slums due to illegal connections are common and everytime am just worried whether my house and items are safe. Lastly, paying rent is sometimes very challenging being that I don't have a stable income so sometimes it means I take loans to pay rent which in the long run affects me.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition in life is one day to work with any corporate companies. Am also a model and I would love one day to be a super star.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
In the morning once I wake up I prepare myself and take tea then go to work of construction or any other hustle I can get that mostly goes up-to 5pm. Then I go back home and on my way back I can go have small chats with my friends before I reach home. Later, I will just watch television and be on my social media pages before I go look for supper cook eat and later go to sleep.
