In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by giving the unconditional transfer to the needy people. Through these funds, we can take care of our most pressing needs and improve our lives for the better. I am and grateful that the organization helped us with the funds.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am the sole breadwinner in my family. My husband, who is old, is not capable of any work to take care of the family. My health problems have, on some occasions, hindered me from doing work. I experience chest pains whenever I do strenuous work. I currently depend on my eldest son, who works in town as a motorist. In the event he does not send us money, we sleep hungry and even lack essential commodities such as washing detergent to wash school uniforms. When I received my transfer, I spent KSH 2000 to buy a goat. I bought the goat as my intention is to use it to accumulate wealth. Once the number of the goats accumulates in numbers, I will sell some and attend to my needs in times of needs. I still have small children who are in school and the goat will come a long way in helping me get school fees when I sell the goats. Besides buying the goat, I spent KSH 800 to buy food for my family. To avoid starving, my family bought the food. I also spent KSH 200 to buy books for my two children who did not have books to write on in school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The message arrived in the early part of the day and I was overjoyed to say the least just because staring at my children each passing day without knowing whether I would afford to send them back to school made me extremely sad because as a parent we strive to give the very best to our children and when we fail it becomes demoralizing and stressful especially if the kids are grown enough to understand. I felt like a failure but as soon as the money arrived my spirits were lifted.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Definitely putting my kids back to school was most vital and the biggest difference that occurred and that meant so much to me as it did to them especially because I was not lucky enough to receive education and gain knowledge and this has therefore been quite a necessity for me to give to my children because I know its impact and importance. Which leads me to say that I am very thankful and grateful for GiveDirectly coming into our lives because we see a great and positive transition in our lives as of now and in the future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Two days prior to receiving the money my children had been sent home from school since I could not afford to finish paying the debt they had in school and all talks with the teachers had completely failed. They were going on their third day away from school the day the money from GiveDirectly arrived and I immediately went ahead to use the funds in order to clear the debt that I owed the school so that my two children would get to continue with their education just like other students. I paid KES 500 for each which accumulated to KES 1,000 then I took the remaining KES 150 and bought stationery for them which included two books and two pens which was KES 100 and the KES 50 I used it to buy laundry detergent that they used to wash their uniform after school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My daughter came back home from her matrimonial home because of the domestic violence she was facing. She came back with her four children, I had no choice but to accommodate them in my one-room house. I do not have any privacy since they came because we all sleep in the same house with my husband. I have always wished of building a bigger house where my grandchildren can sleep and for me and my husband to also have our privacy. Receiving this money will enable me to achieve my wish and have a better house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Amidst all the challenges I get joy and happiness when my family is in good health and wakes up to see another day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When my daughter came back home with his children the burden of taking care of them become too much since she had no means of taking care of them alone. Due to lack of money, we resorted to taking a meal a day just for survival. The situation stresses me sometimes because it is not a guarantee that the food will be available every day.
