How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
It is my aim that I continue to improve my fish farming business in all dimensions so that I can persuade individuals to have Fishpond and I become their point of reference. I would also like to sell the fishlings to them whenever they decide to build a fishpond, and finally, I would like to buy one mode of transportation to reduce the cost of supplying the products.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has left a footprint on our hearts that cannot be erased. Those of us who have went into business will continue to enjoy the results of our labor for many years because I feel I will be in business for a long time. Our living conditions have improved, as has our morale in putting everything in place for the sake of our future; we will always remember GiveDirectly in this place. The fact that education came first in the community engagement forum, followed by enrollment processes, could not possibly cause any difficulties. I would advise that individuals be taught more about business and agriculture because these are the things that will continue to generate revenue after a while, unlike building houses and paying schools fees using the transfers before investing first.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I built a fishpond for $25 because I wanted to venture into a different type of business with better revenues and a readily available market, and I was never disappointed because I have already enjoyed the outcome and am more motivated to do more. I also used a portion of the transfers to add stock to my agrovet business, where I had difficulty having a variety of chemicals due to financial inadequacy. Now, I am supplying them in large quantities for those who do tendering and providing them with different varieties, as compared to before, when I would link them to the next agrovet that had good products. I was able to top up some of the extra cash from my agrovet business revenue, to the remaining transfer amount, which I then use to finish my house. And right now I live happily with my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was before noon while I was in my daily hustle to make ends meet when I received a message on my phone. Since the day was moving slowly due to the hunger I felt, I reluctantly took my phone from my pocket to check what the message was all about. Upon checking, my eyes were stuck on the phone screen after seeing the first transfer of $ had been deposited into my account. I was filled with joy knowing that the entrepreneurial plans I had were going to succeed. There and then, I gained strength and continued with my work.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before the transfer, I was struggling to make the chemist business alive. It was not thriving because it had fewer drugs and people used to go to the neighboring chemists for drugs since mine was unreliable. Thanks to the transfer, enabled me to equip my business, and as of now all my customers are back and I have earned trust from them that whatever drug they need is available at my chemist. All this is a result of the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before withdrawing the money, my wife and I sat to deliberate on how we could use the transfer on. We subdivided the amount into three dockets that are; for the renovation of our house, boosting our business, and for agriculture. For the renovation, we used $180 to put a plywood ceiling into our house as well and did some painting. We are happy as a family that we now stay in a nice-looking house. Thereafter we spent $200 to buy more stock for our chemist business. We opted to do this because we were unable to meet most of our customers' demands since most medicines are expensive. Therefore using the stated amount, we were able to stock most of the drugs which have a higher demand. As of now, the business is doing well and our clients are certified. For the agricultural docket, we used $100 to construct a mini fishpond of 4 square meters. The aim of this was to grow some fish for family consumption. We bought 200 fingerlings which are now growing. For the remaining amount, we bought some food for the family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
When I get this money, I plan to inject it into my on going business instead of starting another one. There's a particular nonprofit organization that is currently working with local farmers here in the village. They supply farm imputs to them and offer guidance throughout the process before linking them with a ready market eventually. It's called MEA and I want to partner with them to supply their farmers with required drugs that the organization itself normally pays for. The only thing I need to do to qualify is just the right stock of specific brands they normally purchase, then apply for their approval. This money is going to help in stocking those high-end drugs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I feel really happy each passing day because of my wife's great health. We have struggled a lot to get this far. For the past three years, she has been having a lot of complications related to pregnancies which normally end in miscarriages just in the first trimester. But it feels differently good this time round because she's already six months and hasn't experience any of that. It used to drain us a lot financially to an extent of spending our savings on her medication.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of reliable sources of income is a big issue here in the village. I'm a businessman running a pharmacy and an agrovet at Matanomanne trading center. Largely this community is made up of farmers of all sorts, and so those are the clients I have been targeting. Unfortunately it's been drought for too long that the farmers themselves do not have sources of income anymore, thus they can't even buy in good numbers. Market is also flooded because we're already more than ten traders of this type in just a small trading center. Most of the time I only make a net profit of $150 in a month. Without my wife's income, we wouldn't make it at all. She's a teacher earning $280 every month. But from that we still have to support extended family, pay school fees for our two children in boarding primary school at $120, as well as repaying loans that my wife took when we were building our family house.
